Michael Travis has a new all-improvised electronic duo called Snakes and Stars. They’re playing PoHo this week and they connected me with him for an interview. Founding drummer of String Cheese Incident, been in the game since before I was born.
We talked about the Grateful Dead, which was awesome for me. And his philosophies on improvisational music in general, and the state of the electronic music scene.

I’m gonna go check out the show tomorrow night. Electronic music isn’t my normal cup of tea but I’m into the improv aspect. I bet it will be a pretty dope gathering of wooks.

in forum: Music DiscussionHey everybody! I’ve been reading the forum for a few weeks and it’s been really cool to watch it unfold so far. 2000s pop-punk music is my jam, so for my first ever thread I thought I would create a place for people to share the best classics from the genre!
There are so many good bands, and for a while growing up it seemed like everybody was listening to emo music. Alas, like all great things it must end, and public interest has shifted to other types of music.

There are so many good bands, and for a while growing up it seemed like everybody was listening to emo music. Alas, like all great things it must end, and public interest has shifted to other types of music.
And, of course, some of the bands have not aged well, for various reasons (ahem.. the accusations). That said, there are still so many good songs from this genre, and I still listen to pop-punk music almost every day even though I’m now in my 30s. So, here we are.
To start this off, I’m going to share one of my all-time favorites. Yes, I decided to start with just one!
And that one is “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard. This is one of the first pop-punk songs I heard and today it’s such an iconic representation of the sound. Accessible, catchy, and best played at high volume.
I’ve got plenty more where this came from, but I want to hear from the community! What are your favorites?
in reply to: How to Become an Artist Manager?Thank you so much for the response! It sounds like I have some work to do because I don’t really know that many bands. I really love music and want to get involved and this seems like a good way for me to do it.
I guess I will start by going to more shows in the local music scene and getting to know some of the people there. That makes sense what you say about coming on strong, and I don’t even know how to book a show so I really have a lot to learn.

in reply to: Union Pier Redevelopment PlanBillionaires shouldn’t exist. This property is near the new IAAM. I recently heard that North Charleston has only 5% black-owned business. I can’t imagine how much lower Charleston’s is. This space should’ve been for community, not more grasstops exclusivity.

Good point.. Don’t piss on us and tell us it’s raining..
in reply to: Union Pier Redevelopment PlanI worked on tour boats in the harbor for a long time and we used to drive past Union Pier every day. Cruise ships take up way too much space in the harbor and those warehouses need to go. I think whatever ends up there is going to be better than what is currently in place.
The story on the waterfront is that this deal has been in the works for a long time. We used to tell people that there was an ongoing legal dispute over the land. I never knew that it was Navarro on the other side of the deal.

Wonder what’s going to happen to the old rice mill wall over there. I’m sure they will find some way to turn it into a gift shop.

in reply to: Reddit Going Public SucksInteresting. I bought a few shares, we’ll see what happens. Not feeling quite so confident about it, and it seems a little bit anti-Reddit for Reddit to pump its own stock for some reason. It’s anti-Reddit for Reddit to even be public. In my eyes it goes against what the platform was founded upon.
It will be interesting to see what happens with this whole saga. Especially with the Google involvement. I believe there might be some sinister things on the horizon when it comes to the overall...

Google owning the internet is really not okay
in forum: CharlestonIf you didn’t already hear, there was a massive announcement made this past week that will change the face of downtown Charleston forever – and for the better. If you didn’t already hear, there was a massive announcement made this past week that will change the face of downtown Charleston forever – and for the better. It was announced that the Charleston Port Authority will sell the 65 acre waterfront property that lines the copper river shoreline of the peninsula from the Ravenel Bridge to the cruise shop landing. Charleston billionaire business man Ben Navarro will buy the property with the intention of developing it in a way that will enrich the community and boost the economy – considering the needs of the citizens and not trying to solely maximize profits with hotels and apartment buildings. He wrote an Op-Ed in the Post & Courier detailing his plans and intentions that I found interesting. We will actually have waterfront restaurants and open spaces an effort to solve the low income housing crisis. The Charleston Port will move up river closer to the Naval Yard – These ships come from Japan .. what’s 2 more miles? I’ll post some links, but I’m curious how everyone feels about this? Are we excited, annoyed, don’t care?

When I first started managing, I reached out to the artist directly with a proposal of helping them book a few shows/ rather than coming on strong to an artist you barely know about managing them — also in your best interest to wait because it might not be a good fit in terms of compatibility (personally and professionally because communal reputation is important). I’ve also discovered another band at a house show. Going up to the band and introducing yourself and finding a way to weave in interest of managing the band is more than reasonable. You will eventually start getting approached by bands to manage them, once you’ve made enough of a name for yourself for people to come to you.
I now run my management through more of a freelance booking forum- that way income is a more definitive factor. I also just feel like on a DIY level booking is the main aspect of managing along with giving the band advice to better following, music, social media, etc. but it’s hard to just get paid for “advice” until the band is on a larger level. I find this way of running my business is more effective for me and my clarity in working with people. Have a clear mission- no one wants to hire empty ideas. Come in with a plan of how you bring something different to the table. And why your advice is valuable.
when I first started I didn’t charge, mostly because I had an insecurity that I didn’t deserve it/ the band needed it more.
GET PAID. Even if it’s minimal (which it will be a majority of the time, on a smaller level). I’ve learned how important it is to make a percentage – making sure you aren’t taken advantage of- especially as a woman.Your time and efforts are valuable and should be valued.
last thing- LOVE THE ARTIST’S MUSIC. If you’re passionate it propels your work ethic and encourages the band.
Just my two cents!!!
best of luck
in forum: Music DiscussionCosmo Pyke was one of the most talented artists I saw at SXSW this year. He’s from the UK and had success with the Just Cosmo EP and the single that followed, “Chronic Sunshine,” but hasn’t released much since then.

With a couple new singles out and a recent SXSW showcase, I think we’ll be hearing more about him over the next year or so. I’ve become a big fan of his sound. It reminds me of King Krule, who was super popular back when I was in college. The difference is a more soulful, groovy sound that is really cool.
In the live setting, Cosmo had a full band that was dope. The vibe was really mixed, with some of the soulful sounds you’ll hear on many of his recordings, but also some more dissonant indie rock type stuff that was very reminiscent of Bright Eyes to my ears, and even some rapping.
I think he’s got it all and he’s going to probably become an indie icon over the next few years. He’s got the name, the look, and the sound. And he pulls it off even better in the live setting. It’s another example of the genre-less direction I can see the music industry is heading in right now.
“Low” (2024)
“Outlaw” (2024)
This is the one that reminds me of Bright Eyes. So damn good.
And then the EP that blew up:
Just Cosmo (2017)
