Babe Club popped up at the Extra Chill Happy Hour last night at LO-Fi Brewing in Charleston. Jenna played a solo set at the open mic, with new Babe Club songs, and then Corey Campbell hopped up there and they did “The Core” as a duo. Good stuff.

New single this morning called “Save Me”

Here’s an article from ABC documenting the whole thing: https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/after-drake-battle-kendrick-lamar-turns-victory-lap-111267244

And a quote from the article:

“Let the world see this,” he said. “You ain’t seen this many sections on one stage keeping it together and having peace. … For all of us to be on this stage together, unity, from East side … LA, Crips, Bloods, Piru — this … is special, man. We put this … together just for ya’ll.

“This … ain’t got nothing to do with no song at this point, ain’t got nothing to do with no back and forth records, it’s got everything to do with this moment right here. That’s what this … was about, to bring all of us together.”

After the final song, Lamar exited, saying “I promise you this won’t be the last of us.” The stabbing horns of the “Not Like Us” instrumental kicked in once again and the crowd rapped the lyrics without Lamar as they filed through hallways out to the parking lot. The Twitch and Prime Video livestream concluded.

Streaming Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends” at the Forum in LA right now. Free on Amazon Prime. He just brought out Dr. Dre and did “Still D.R.E.” and 2pac’s “California Love” and then Dr. Dre said “I see dead people” to introduce “Not Like Us.” Kendrick did the “certified lover boy — certified pedophile” / “tryina strike a chord and it’s probably A-Minor” verse three times and then did the full song.

What a wild experience it must be to be at this show. He’s also brought out tons of other special guests including Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, J. Rock, and more.

This is really sick. And all these rappers are co-signing “Not Like Us” indirectly by being part of this event.

Kendrick Lamar is in my opinion cementing himself as one of the greatest rappers of all time, if not the single greatest.

Update: He did “Not Like Us” a fourth time

    Update 2: Five times

New track from Human Resources, their first one since last year. This comes in advance of their upcoming set at Rose Moon Festival at LO-Fi Brewing next Saturday, June 22nd. Indie pop.

Self-produced by the band and mixed by drummer @coastrecords

They said there is more on the way. If I remember correctly, they’ve been cooking up a new album, which will be the follow-up to Champagne from 2018. That album has a lot of music scene nostalgia for me personally and I’m sure many others around here.

in reply to: Charleston ‘Major Festival’ Scene: It’s Hilfiger, Not FUBU

I’ve been trying to build what you describe for years with Extra Chill Fest. Getting the local support in terms of ticket buyers has proven to be extremely difficult, but it has certainly grown. I have not tried much for sponsors since the first year (2018). Back then I had a friend who was the local PBR rep, and another friend who was helping me stay organized on the production / budget side of things. Both of them have since moved away.

Not saying that I don’t think it’s worth trying, but I don’t even know where to begin. Those connections made it happen.

I am obviously very interested in hosting a large scale event of this kind. It has been my dream to host a giant music festival with all genres and lots of awesome art and local collaboration. My plan was to just find a way to become wealthy first and then put up the money myself to buy property and build the festival grounds. That has also proven to be difficult, lol, but I still believe in it.

I think working with people who see this kind of community vision is the best path forward. Things have been frustrating for me lately but I’ve come to understand that what we’re doing is good and it is working. We’re just fighting an uphill battle in a city (and a state) that does not embrace its home-grown artists like it should.

Ultimately, getting people to band together and understand that their presence is more than just a fun night out on the town. Or maybe it’s a matter of properly marketing our events as just a fun night out on the town. Either way, we need to find a way to get and hold the attention of the mainstream Charleston audience (i.e. the people with money to spend). Because I don’t think we’re going to see any change for the better in terms of cost of living, talented artists moving to town more than they move out, and things like that anytime soon.

We’ve gotta work with the hand we’ve been dealt in this case.

in reply to: Twen – Nashville, TN (and in the van)

Twen just released another new single, just two days before their tour starts. “Lucky Onze” oozes with cool and continues to show the band’s versatility. They have now released three singles with distinct vibes and sounds, that still manage to come from the same universe.

I’m really excited to see them on the deck at Pour House this Sunday. I highly encourage anybody who lives in the region of Twen’s touring to go to a show this summer if you have the chance.
