Awesome. Can’t wait for the tinroof show !!
in reply to: Share Your First Song of the DayI have a few different playlists that I hit first thing when I get to work… but this is one that gets played a lot. I skip some of the songs sometimes, but it’s overall upbeat and sort of positive vibe helps me to get moving when faced with the Monday blues…
in reply to: Highwater 2024Reddit threads on Highwater this year, echo much of the same issues as the previous events. The artists and the music itself outside of our personal preferences is mostly just fine. I agree with Chris, that there should be more local representation, but was happy to see Babe Club got to be part of things.
The vast majority of complaints I’m seeing are all about poor planning, inadequate resources, high prices, lack of security and an information desert, for which people simply couldn’t get the information they needed.
I was feeling a little FOMO having not gone this year, but honestly, seeing photos and video clips, and not being a ‘huge’ fan of the lineup along with the weather goin’ kinda south on day 2, I don’t feel like I actually missed out on much other than the commaraderie with my fellow photogs in the pit… I do lament that a little.
I think Loserfest at the RA a few weeks back was probably a lot more fun.
in reply to: The Gimp – image ManipulationIf it turns out that you like the Gimp, and I think you will… one of the most powerful plugins, that adds just a ton of functionality is called G’mic… ostensibly “gimmick”.
Here’s an article explaining what it is, does, and how to get and use it.
I personally use this for creating montage/collage images for my photos, so that I can post multiple images in one, where otherwise it’s not easy to share more than one image at a time. You can see at least one example in my other thread here about the Jerkweed show last weekend.

in reply to: Sweetwater Extra Chill 420Meh… no one in marketing, names anything without looking it up first. It is absolutely reasonable and logical to assume they at the very minimum did an internet search for “Extra Chill” before making the decision to name their drink. They saw the results, of which on google… extrachill (regardless of how you spell it, separate it, hyphenate it, etc…) takes up the entire first page. The website, the insta’ the FB, a soundcloud account all lead right back to this website.
They knew, and then they did it anyway.
It is also reasonable to assume that they just figure they’re too big to be called out or that they can’t be hurt by this. Which may or may not be true, but what is true is that it was/is an asshole move.
in reply to: The Gimp – image ManipulationAgree about the learning curve, and also… it’s really no different than diving into PS – which costs an arm and a leg and is subscription based.
There are a ton more of these free photo/image manipulation, and photography and even video related softwares. Many of them curated at https://pixls.us/
Another one that I recommend that is a sweet replacement for Adobe’s “Lightroom” is “Darktable”.
For artists looking to make vector work – stickers, t-shirts, band/concert posters and the like, a couple of highly recommended softwares are Krita, and Inkscape.
in reply to: What Are You Listening To Right Now?These young woman, just killin’ it live. Hard rock personified. From their originals to their Metallica covers, they just knock it clean out of the park. This peformance has been on my repeat/playlist at work for a few weeks now. Really enjoy it a lot. Highly recommended if you’re a hard rock fan… and worth taking a look/listen even if you’re not.
in reply to: What Are You Listening To Right Now?This odd story telling (sort of) song with an infectious melody is well… infectious. The video is really well done, and is worth watching all the way through for the interesting ending.
Note that the main char’ in the video is played (best lip sync ever) by the English actor David Thewlis, who you’ve undoubtedly scene in a number of television shows and movies over the years. The actual singer, makes an appearance as a cameo… interesting way to make a video to say the least. It’s engaging, and the lyrics might be interpreted as both dark and uplifting simultaneously. At the minimum, it’s thought provoking.
There is a second version featuring Elton John as well, and while I think it’s ok, I prefer this original.
Check out some of their other work for it’s weirdness, engaging themes around economics, relationships and more.
in reply to: Hi RenThe lamp going on and off in the background definitely lends it an air of ‘crazy’.
I really like this artist. He’s getting a lot of attention after this, I think, ground breaking song and video, and hopefully making a lot of money. He’s got a lot of live music out there too, that proves his talent isn’t a one-off thing.
Another song, a short instrumental with similar structure but different sound…
(I was worried he would fall off the damned cliff).
in reply to: What Are You Listening To Right Now?Continuing with the theme of female singer songwriters, this is Sizzy Rocket, Cali/New York based. Bridging multiple genres, from rap/hip-hop to rock punk, funk… she really doesn’t have any limits. Live peformances range from wild to to somewhat subdued. Her KEXP session is of particular interest, doing solo, songs from her album. Her lyrics are like no one else, and again, I can’t even begin to really explain how broad her work is. I’m going to post here a pop funk song (You let me know how you might describe it) but don’t sell her short in that some of her other work is far deeper and of intellectual interest. This one has a hell of a hook tho… you’ll know it when you hear it.
“Text me, text your other trustworthy friends, and ask them to go like and leave a comment on your post.”
Right on… good advice, and thanks!
Feel free to hit me up too if you need help boosting something.
For the other artists here… I try to like everyone’s posts when I see them on Insta. Doesn’t have to be something I’m attending or have a deep interest in. If I know you I’m gonna click the ‘like’ button just to try to help out.
If we all do that for each other in the spirit of community it’s good for everyone.
in reply to: Alice FredenhamYeah man, Tedeschi Trucks Band is awesome…. and I like pretty much everything John Prine has ever written. I think he’s probably one of the top ten songwriters of the 20th century. Probably one of the single most covered artists to have ever lived.
Their music is very different but I kind of categorize him with the likes of Leonard Cohen in regard to having such immense talent.
