Best country love song of all time? I wrote an essay about it a few months back on the main blog. Noah Kahan sings this one too but Isbell is the one who wrote it, and to have written a song like this places you pretty high in my personal rankings of songwriters.
-
Band of Horses live cover of J.J. Cale’s “Thirteen Days.” From their recent live album, Live Acoustic at the Ryman, Volume 2. Recorded in 2013. The whole thing is worth checking out but this cover is my favorite.
-
I saw Kanika Moore sing this at Charleston Pour House with Noah Jones, Jeff Caldwell, Ben Mossman, and Oleg Terentiev. Absolutely sick. Opening for Runaway Gin’s 10th Anniversary weekend. This song is awesome

In honor of the first SUSTO album turning 10 years old this week, this is one of my favorite SUSTO videos. “Smoking Outside” was the first song of theirs I heard and I’ve been a big fan ever since.
I especially like it because my friends Corey and Jenna from Babe Club were in the band at the time and look how young they are. We’re the same age, so this is also a reminder of how fast time really goes.
SUSTO has been a pivotal band in the history of Extra Chill and it all started when “Smoking Outside” came on my Spotify Discover weekly one day not long before the Summer Shindig took place in the Royal American parking lot, summer 2016.

Still one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs

Just wanted to share what will likely be my EP of the year for 2024…

i will be pretty when i die’s self-titled debut – released 2/2/24
Gustavo Nome (Gingerbee and MATPM) and Clementine Teare (Goth Lipstick) join forces to create the boygenius of the DIY emo folk underground. The lead single “leaves” is my most listened to song of all time. Sounds from this EP range from gorgeous violins, whispers and screams from near and far, and acoustic guitars recorded outside of a 7/11. Another song I’ll draw attention to is the delicate “cicadas,” which meanders between soft-intimate songwriting and muted screams from the background. It’s a choice many would stray away from but it pays off in spades here to create a tumultuous sense of emotion. It’s an impressive range of feelings and sounds to display in just under 16 minutes.Support them on bandcamp here:

Just found this band on Spotify. This song has some vibes. I like how it’s chill and soulful but also has some heavier elements of plain old rock & roll to it, in terms of the way it’s arranged. Sounds creative an inspired to me.
From Louisville, Kentucky. Three piece rock band.
-
Found this live show from Hum last night. I love this band, especially their album You’d Prefer an Astronaut. My fav tracks are “Stars,” “The Pod,” and “Why I Like the Robbins.” I think they are a super underrated 90s band that deserves more attention. Definitely worth checking out.
-
Here’s a song from Mitski, who I have been loving lately. She really has something special.
-
-
Hum rules! They are one of those dope 90s bands that kind of flew under the radar. They’ve got Smashing Pumpkins vibes but somehow don’t sound dated to my ears in 2024.
-
From these guys I’ve been following since we were in high school. Thankfully the artists from that scene that are still putting stuff out (some 13 years later) are super competent from a songwriting and recording perspective
-
Oh nice I’m digging this. Reminds me of Turnover.
According to my calculations these guys are about our age. Spotify bio says they met in Junior High in 2008.
STRONG ISLAND!
-
@chubes Yes, totally!! I’m a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan as well.
-
Dude I don’t think I’ve ever heard this band.. That’s crazy.. thanks for sharing.. I guess in 1998 (I’m kinda old) I was like mainly listening to and seeing Phish.. In the same month as this Hum video Phish played a few of their best concerts ever at Nassau Coliseum in NY , Near Chubes Homeland.

Ahh yes, it all comes back to Phish eventually

Just came across this song “I’m A Man” by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth – who is now 70 years old. Pretty bad ass .. curious what y’all think of it…
-
Fuck yeah! Kim Gordon is the coolest. This track absolutely rocks. One the best songs I’ve heard so far this year.
-
Track 2 of this single goes insane too! Holy $#¥%!
-
Pretty cool to be making music like that at 70
-
Really digging this string trio by Penderecki (1991). And as a beginning viola player Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt’s playing is so cool!
-
Hey that was awesome, thank you for signing up and sharing! You’re the guy who suggested the Classical Music board on Reddit 🙂
-
Axwell shared this back in 2012, I remember hearing it for my first time at electric daisy carnival NYC 2011. It’s a worldwide hit
https://open.spotify.com/track/2ud5ukcAgwOki5PyE53mPl?si=90b17f7aa8564488
It’s a remix of a song by Gigi D’Agostino. Not my favorite, it has that weird electro-euro super festival pop they like bouncing around to on the less free continents. Very memorable lyrics & melody.
https://open.spotify.com/track/04zrPERrSO4CfyargthKJ9?si=b1557b7236884b4a
A couple more by Gigi. I remember hearing these back on windows 95.
-
some canadian chill
-
Love this chick
-
j’adore
-
this is a song by LEN of “Steal My Sunshine” fame, off the same album (1999).
I recommend their Superstar album too, here’s Wiggle, a fun one with a groovey bass. Lyrics are funny. “Hey Nick, what’s with the girls you pick? Seen better tits on a sock”. Song goes on with them yelling in the background (not GG Allen yelling.. you’ll see). Superstar was their first album, 1995, 4 years before Steal My Sunshine.
-
fun quirky one. fun to sing. Peter Ivers was a bit of strange bird, harvard educated & had his own TV show on public access.
-
Good album, self titled, 2018
-
Spotify described “best Jackin House artist”. Jackin House is apparently a legitimate genre, beatport has its own space (https://www.beatport.com/genre/jackin-house/97) for it. News to me. Upbeat song, fun, but it doesn’t make me feel like jackin it. As a matter of fact under most circumstances i’d stay far away from any sort of ‘jackin house’, ew.
-
I love these M.O.S. guys. Believe they’re a couple of guys out of Russia.
-
some core volen sentir
-
Very chill
-
Fell in love with this solo act last year, criminally under-listened to IMO! Almost like a Broken Bells kind of sound? Some kind of pop/funk/indie rock, some proggy vibes too.
-
Best song I’ve heard so far this year comes from Charleston indie rock outfit KELLY.
Incredible music from some incredible people.
Drums: Drew Lewis Bass: Tommy Merritt Piano: Noah James Vocals/guitar: Kelly Morris
Check out the video below and share on socials to help them get tiny desk’s attention!
-
Love all these guys ! Shout out to Wolfie and The Space .. that room has given us so much incredible music over the years.
-
My absolute favorite Audiotree Live performance. The passion from Nick Rattigan makes the performance.
-
Genuinely amazed by this guy. The songwriting is so gripping and his vocals are nothing short of breathtaking. Everyone killed it on their instruments. That part at 3:25 absolutely captures me- it’s a thrilling listen. Bravo KELLY!
…and of course shoutout Wolfgang Zimmerman too for The Space.
-
Really is sounding dope. Love to see Kelly doing some HD quality shit like this. He needs a record deal, would allow him to fund an album and make a whole record worth of stuff that sounds like this
-
That was real nice. Have you ever heard of Daniel Norgren? Another chill Canadian
-
Hey everyone. I stumbled upon this track:
By the description, it looks like it was made by Mono Lloyd. The album appears to be Freak City.
It’s a good listen and was released on Feb. 18 of this year.
Does anyone know anything about this? Thank you.
-
We all have a love for the 13 Reasons Why actor, Dylan Minnette.
AKA lead singer of Wallows.
Saw these guys at Music Farm in February of 2020!
Give a listen to “Your Apartment” – Their first release in over two years!
-
A couple good ones that I found while exploring the SXSW 2024 lineup
Laney Tripp – “Cedar Island”
It’s like Jimmy Buffett meets Phoebe Bridgers. I love it.
Daisy Rickman – “Feed the Forest”
Such cool layers and atmospheric effects on this track.
-
I don’t know anything about it, but I also don’t find it to be a particularly good listen either. It sounds like sloppy punk rock from some guys who need more practice.
-
-
of Montreal dropped “Yung Hearts Bleed Free” earlier this month. A track that utilizes the full capacity of synth and eclectic effects. Heavily draped in an 80s French pop blanket even next to their edgy discography. A casual yet psychedelic” call and response” tune.
-
This is an awesome song
-
As I go through my SXSW picks late at night, i recalled this song that I heard live. BODEGA. A band from NYC and their song “Doers” has such a great classic New York sound, lyrically and musically.
-
Discovered this one a few years back and have it in my semi-regular playlist. Love the line, “She cut a hole in the fence and she ran “… escaping whatever it is that is holding us back.
Lyrics…
-
This young woman, hailing from Norway, is an internationally recognized talent. Singer, songwriter, pianist… I really love her clever lyricism. The line in this song.. “You’re as safe as a mountain, but know that I am dynamite”, is so bold and frankly, inspiring. Punching above her weight… and age. This one is a hit song for her… but I would encourage listening to the rest of her discography. Leaning hard into her live performances will leave you really impressed.
-
Lyrically clever and unique, great sound, super fun and sexy with a distinct humorous twist. On-Point background vocals by Rabbit. Produced by Ant of Atmosphere. This is really fun. You can’t NOT like this song and video.
-
Continuing with the theme of female singer songwriters, this is Sizzy Rocket, Cali/New York based. Bridging multiple genres, from rap/hip-hop to rock punk, funk… she really doesn’t have any limits. Live peformances range from wild to to somewhat subdued. Her KEXP session is of particular interest, doing solo, songs from her album. Her lyrics are like no one else, and again, I can’t even begin to really explain how broad her work is. I’m going to post here a pop funk song (You let me know how you might describe it) but don’t sell her short in that some of her other work is far deeper and of intellectual interest. This one has a hell of a hook tho… you’ll know it when you hear it.
-
This odd story telling (sort of) song with an infectious melody is well… infectious. The video is really well done, and is worth watching all the way through for the interesting ending.
Note that the main char’ in the video is played (best lip sync ever) by the English actor David Thewlis, who you’ve undoubtedly scene in a number of television shows and movies over the years. The actual singer, makes an appearance as a cameo… interesting way to make a video to say the least. It’s engaging, and the lyrics might be interpreted as both dark and uplifting simultaneously. At the minimum, it’s thought provoking.
There is a second version featuring Elton John as well, and while I think it’s ok, I prefer this original.
Check out some of their other work for it’s weirdness, engaging themes around economics, relationships and more.
-
These young woman, just killin’ it live. Hard rock personified. From their originals to their Metallica covers, they just knock it clean out of the park. This peformance has been on my repeat/playlist at work for a few weeks now. Really enjoy it a lot. Highly recommended if you’re a hard rock fan… and worth taking a look/listen even if you’re not.
-
Go see The Bright Light Social Hour on Monday at Pour House. Came down to Jacksonville to see them and Mo Lowda. They put on one hell of a show and I can’t wait to see a full set.
-
Just wanted to share how f*cking awesome it is that there’s a deftones needledrop in an early 2000’s dbz movie- makes me laugh a bit but simultaneously makes me remember being a kid in the 2000’s and i love it

RIP Akira Toriyama 🐐

Diggin/ up some gold.
I was fortunate to be able to photograph Maggie Koerner at the Charleston Pourhouse back in 2019, when she opened, for another favorite, Tank and the Bangas. Recently, I’ve been going back through shoots I’ve done in the past, and attempting to apply new methods of editing to my images… as both my ability and the software has improved over the years, allowing me to get ‘more’ from even those older images.
I’ll add the link for that at the bottom if you care to poke around… but definitely check out Maggie’s work. Her originals are really good and she nails down a few cover tunes as well. If you ever get the chance to see her live, don’t pass it up, she absolutely kills the stage show.
Her song, “Love Drug” (FF to 4:30) is probably my fave from this session, but for sure it’s all excellent. Get your face melted!
-
@steveaycockphoto yah! she has a great voice. that song “Love Drug” was great.
-

Smooth, brilliant, entrancing, and addicting all come to mind when attempting to pin words to this masterwork from Marcus Brown. It’s so soulful and danceable, the opening 3 track run is easily one of the best 3 track runs of last year. It’s a little bit front-loaded but it awesome all the way through. As fresh as it gets in the year of our lord 2023. Following the success of this record, Marcus Brown signed to XL records.
Favorite Tracks: “Quantum Suicide,” “Shed That Fear,” “Daddy,” “The Fields,” and “Workers Interlude”Their 2024 release Catching Chickens EP is easily one of the best pieces of music to come out this year! Peak!
“Hell of a Ride” and “Poison-Soaked” are SOTY contenders (both in my top 5 so far). -
MAY 21st at the Charleston Pour House we’ll see the return of the American psychobilly trio, Rev. Horton heat. I got to photograph them back in October of 2019. You can see me experimenting with the ever popular for concert photography ‘Star filter’ in these. Done right it’s fantastic… overdone, it’s corny. I may have baked some of these too long… but hey, all in good fun.
A great show by some very remarkably talented and experienced musicians. Worth it in the spades to see Mr. Heath play the hell out of his guitar!!
I’m signed up to shoot that night, so if you make it out, say hi !!

Band of Horses GA tix at Firefly this Fri (8/30) are now 2 for 1….still 80+ for 2 w/ ticketmaster fees

Happy Belated Halloween. Meet Witch, a Zamrock band that’s kind of jazzy, kind of blues-y, kind of jammy, kind of disco-y, kind of folky and super funky. Witch was popular in the 1970’s after Zambia gained independence from the UK. I don’t remember how I came upon this album but it’s one of those albums you keep wanting to go back to. It’s so many things all at once but somehow fits together just fine. “Witch: We Intend to Cause Havoc!”, linked below
-
@toastedcarrot WITCH is awesome! I saw them at the PoHo a couple years ago.
-
@chubes what?! That’s insane. I had no idea they came through here.
-
This shit is fucking dope
Justice ft. Tame Impala
-
A bit late to this one, but Cameron Winters “Heavy Metal” that came out on December 6th. I missed my chance to see Geese by like 10 minutes when I went to the King Gizzard show because I ended up being late but from what I know of that band, I really was suprised of the sound of this album. Its filled with experimental, emotional folk ballads, and has all of these blues and country undertones that are very captivating—especially “Drinking Age”. Definitely worth a listen.
-
There’s no other band quite like Boris. This one’s a long time fav album
-
I am listening to my single “Bestfriend (Danny)” This song is about my bestfriend Danny! Showing appreciation! Literally my everything! Please go check it out!
