Noah Kahan sings this one too but Isbell is the one who wrote it, and to have written a song like this places you pretty high in my personal rankings of songwriters.

Cale’s “Thirteen Days.” From their recent live album, Live Acoustic at the Ryman, Volume 2. Recorded in 2013. The whole thing is worth checking out but this cover is my favorite.

3| February 4, 2024 at 9:47 pmchubesHMFICLocal Scene: Austin, TXRank: FlurryPoints: 20817In honor of the first SUSTO album turning 10 years old this week, this is one of my favorite SUSTO videos. “Smoking Outside” was the first song of theirs I heard and I’ve been a big fan ever since.
I especially like it because my friends Corey and Jenna from Babe Club were in the band at the time and look how young they are. We’re the same age, so this is also a reminder of how fast time really goes.
SUSTO has been a pivotal band in the history of Extra Chill and it all started when “Smoking Outside” came on my Spotify Discover weekly one day not long before the Summer Shindig took place in the Royal American parking lot, summer 2016.

i will be pretty when i die’s self-titled debut – released 2/2/24
Gustavo Nome (Gingerbee and MATPM) and Clementine Teare (Goth Lipstick) join forces to create the boygenius of the DIY emo folk underground. The lead single “leaves” is my most listened to song of all time. Sounds from this EP range from gorgeous violins, whispers and screams from near and far, and acoustic guitars recorded outside of a 7/11. Another song I’ll draw attention to is the delicate “cicadas,” which meanders between soft-intimate songwriting and muted screams from the background. It’s a choice many would stray away from but it pays off in spades here to create a tumultuous sense of emotion. It’s an impressive range of feelings and sounds to display in just under 16 minutes.Support them on bandcamp here:

I like how it’s chill and soulful but also has some heavier elements of plain old rock & roll to it, in terms of the way it’s arranged. Sounds creative an inspired to me.
From Louisville, Kentucky. Three piece rock band.

My fav tracks are “Stars,” “The Pod,” and “Why I Like the Robbins.” I think they are a super underrated 90s band that deserves more attention. Definitely worth checking out.

They are one of those dope 90s bands that kind of flew under the radar. They’ve got Smashing Pumpkins vibes but somehow don’t sound dated to my ears in 2024.

Thankfully the artists from that scene that are still putting stuff out (some 13 years later) are super competent from a songwriting and recording perspective
