GarciaLive Volume 21 has been out for about a month and I absolutely love it. Show is from February 13th, 1976, with two tracks at the end from February 15th.

The 1976 sound was supremely chill both in the Grateful Dead and the JGB world. This GarciaLive embodies that chill sound quite well.

My favorite after several listens is “The Harder They Come.” 18+ minutes of pure Jerry chillness, with some great building towards the end. Jerry’s last solo is just excellent.

Whole CD is worth a listen but this is the one you gotta hear if you only picked one

New track from Colatura, an NYC band that I saw in the middle of the day at SXSW, at Lazarus Brewing. The set was at like 1pm and they still managed to impress the relatively small early crowd.

“Suffer Dude” came out on July 11th

You know, I forgot to come back here and share my full review of SXSW 2024, which ended up on the blog. Combined with these notes, I think I provided some really comprehensive coverage. And I got to test out this forum.

It was a wonderful experience for me and it made we want to move to Austin. That move is confirmed happening in the middle of November. Once I get to Austin I hope to immerse myself in the music scene there and try to create connections between Austin and Charleston, while reaching a much larger audience.

This will be a lot of pivoting and figuring things out, but I do believe this forum will help facilitate that transition. Especially with the opportunity to expand by adding more forums over time.

Anyway, that’s enough rambling. Here’s the link to my SXSW review: https://extrachill.com/sxsw-2024-my-experience

I’ll probably be doing SXSW every year until Extra Chill reaches its end.

Last month you sent me that Larry Lovestein album, the Mac Miller jazz project. I can hear the influence on the beat. That saxophone sounds nice.

I can also hear some Mac Miller influence on your verse, specifically on your last lyric: “My hue is saturated, and I’mma hide inside the shade until my casket painted”

DollaMenu of course crushed it as always.

For those who aren’t in the loop on Mac Miller side projects, Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival is a 2012 release from Mac Miller that features jazz lounge tracks. Not quite hip-hop, but certainly hip-hop oriented in his vocal styling. Super cool project worth checking out, and I think you’ll also hear the influence on Ben’s production.

This is sick man, thanks for sharing! I noticed you’re racking up the streams on this track too. Congrats on that. 21,000+ on Spotify as of my writing this.

Including different languages saying “Aight, Yup” in the lyrics captions is a nice touch.

@heaven_scent i’ll just say one thing

I was at work the other night, and my charter guests from Vermont were playing Noah Kahan and they all knew the words to every song.

I thought it sounded pretty good.

@MarleyFacedBoy dude yeah i haven’t had a chance to get through the whole new album yet (Phish new album Evolve, out today), but I just listened to that “Lonely Trip” a few times. Sounds awesome.

I think a lot of Phish fans just want their face melted the whole show lol. Lonely Trip is a great song.

    RE: n3 Charleston 2019

Honestly I don’t even remember hearing that. I will have to go back and check out that show again. That was so early in my Phish loving career that I didn’t really know what I was hearing. I do know that of all the Phish shows I’ve seen, that one is the weakest. Followed by MSG 12/28/22, which I wouldn’t call exceptionally weak, but compared to the madness of the following night…

Maybe I will review the new Phish album in the Music Reviews section next week. (UPDATE: here is my review of Evolve)

Babe Club – “Wifi Boyfriend” out now.

This song originated via the Song Confessional podcast, in which songwriters turn anonymous confessions into new music. Jenna and Corey went to Austin to record this one, based on a confession recorded at the Artsplosure Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina.

See the Instagram post announcing the release for more info.

Babe Club plays at Lofi Brewing in Charleston next Friday, July 19th
