Really good band I found out about at SXSW this year. It seems like a lot of younger bands are going for the genre-less approach these days.

Greg Freeman will play some shoegaze, alternative rock, jam, and then dive into a 90s alt country tune. It doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than itself, which is admirable and works well within today’s very saturated art world. It’s so easy to be basic, and nobody wants basic. So, Greg Freeman is basically himself, and writes what he feels.

So, you’re saying that Extra Chill might become an Austin-based music blog? Hell yeah!

Glad you got to check out Casino El Camino. That place is legendary. You might stand in line for a moment to order food, but once it comes out you can see that it was clearly worth the wait.

You’ve gotta try their wings next!

    Best sets yesterday:

    Alec Meza @ Yeti Store

    Proxima Parada @ Empire

    TAUK @ Empire

Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country @ Empire

    Open Jam @ VooDoo Doughnut

El Combo Oscuro @ Hotel Vegas

Loved to see some jam band representation yesterday. Got to catch up with A.C. from TAUK for a moment after their set and gave him (another) Extra Chill sticker, which he said was going on his case.

The open jam was rad. There were several random people off the street who hopped up on stage including one very...

Yo, I know it’s like 5am but I’m listening to Ethiopiques right now. It’s kind of perfect vibes for this time of night/day/morning. Thank you for sharing and for the detailed info on it. Love it

@qrisg what do you mean by that more specifically?

like, we keep track of local artists tour dates?

@qrisg you’re probably right, the old man picked a weird fight with that one. Also, i guess he had hoped that more people would follow suit but that didn’t happen.

Neil’s been anti Spotify for a long time. At one time he tried to start his own high res streaming service but it never took off (Pono)

The motives are not super important to me at the end of the day, because the result is i’ll be able to stream my boy again

I’m hearing from people that it could be a cool idea to build a calendar of booked shows for local artists to see who’s playing when and possibly schedule around dates their friends are playing.

I feel like Neil has always been anti establishment. Somehow anti record labels and anti bootleggers at the same time. He exists in this sort of moral purgatory .. Happy to have his music back online, but coming after he sold half of his publishing for $150 million dollars it’s hard to believe that his justifications are pure. Oh, I won’t stream on Spotify because of Joe Rogan, but as soon as Joe Rogan is on other streaming services he justifies his return because all of a sudden it’s not...

    @marleyfacedboy

Venues yes, haven’t found the specific head bar yet but i’m going to see Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country today at Empire.

Goose played at Stubbs not too long ago.

    so did Futurebirds

all of these venues are within a 2 mile radius

My wife and I attended the Rip City event at Silver Hill Studio last month and we laughed our hearts out. I for one love to see that Charleston is beginning to develop a stronger comedy presence. We need more laughs in the Holy City! Keep up the good work!

Persona is the biggest one for me. I like to feel like I’m rooting for a supervillain when I listen to rap music. I want them to be a drug dealing, potentially murderous individual with no respect for society or its rules.

All of their other attributes must play into this persona, from the lyrics, to the beat selection, to the crowd control (or lack thereof).

Travis Scott is one great example of the demonic rapper archetype. Something about that raw edge is just so appealing to me, despite...

Also, I’m probably going to move to Austin this fall. I love it here and it seems like there are many more opportunities for someone who wants to have a legitimate business in the music industry in this city.

I love Charleston but being in Austin makes it feel so small.

Since Extra Chill is already established in the music media world, I would not be starting entirely from the bottom in Austin. I would have to make all the venue connections and stuff, but in terms of acquiring tickets and...

As a big Neil Young fan, I’m pretty happy to hear that he’s back on Spotify. I mainly use Spotify for listening to music, so when he was removed, there became a serious lack of Neil in my life.

His letter is pretty funny. He still throws shade even with the return.

Best music I saw yesterday 3/12/24 in Austin, TX:

    The Vices @ Side Bar

    Bodega @ Side Bar

    Cosmo Pyke @ Seven Grand

Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol @ Empire Control Room

The Vices @ Valhalla (late night)

I also saw some sets that were just alright. I won’t even mention them.

Dinner at Casino El Camino was fire. Had the buffalo burger. It’s a dang 3/4 hunk of beef cooked to perfection. And relatively affordable for what you get.

Another day coming up. Including our own jam down at VooDoo...
