in reply to: Texas THC Ban

Only a month later and we’re back in the same situation again. Another THC ban bill has passed through the Texas Senate

The legislation would continue to outright ban cannabis products with “any amount” of cannabinoids other the CBD and CBG. Even mere possession of a prohibited cannabis item would be punishable as a Class B misdemeanor, carrying up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

    Booooooooooooo!!!!

Greg Abbott has called another special session. Hinging on his signature yet again. We will find out in the next 30 days, I think.

in reply to: Extra Chill in Austin, TX

It’s been a minute since I’ve checked in on this thread. I’ve been in Austin about 9 months now, but honestly haven’t had the ability to go out and explore as much as I would have liked yet.

This fall, I will be moving to a spot downtown on the East Side, which will have me out and about much more often. I’m really looking forward to that.

Coming out here without a plan was probably misguided to an extent. I ran out of money and lived in a cave for a while. But now I’ve got a solid gig working kayak tours on Lady Bird Lake, and things are looking up.

Not to mention, all of the upgrades I’ve made to Extra Chill are starting to compound on each other. I’ve been a bit out of the loop on music journalism for the past few months, but that’s just because I’m trying to get my finances straight and my stability in check.

That boat captain safety net in Charleston was pretty real. It kept me afloat, literally, while I worked on Extra Chill. It wasn’t so easy to replace, but I’ve got it figured out now.

Cheers to whoever reads this. I’m hoping to start spreading the word about Extra Chill in Austin more soon. I’ve dipped my toes in but haven’t truly met that many people in the music scene yet. Nowhere near the level of contacts I have in Charleston.

That’s to be expected considering I lived in Charleston for 13 years. Moving has lit a massive fire under my ass to try and innovate and do something different and I think I’ve about started to achieve that.

    Until next time,

    Chubes

it’s been a hot minute since i’ve done any writing

I realized my newsletter hasn’t gone out since May.

Whenever i wait too long between sends, i get a big wave of unsubscribes.

i still love to write. i’m just trying to make some fucking money right now and this has become a passion project at this point in my life

I’m building WordPress plugins, which i will use on Extra Chill. But i’m going to sell them as products too. That’s where my focus is right now

But i’m always going to funnel back into this project. At least i think i will. Extra Chill is my baby and it also gets me a lot of free concert tickets.

i just need to figure some shit out, and doing music journalism takes up a lot of time, and doesn’t really pay, especially when it comes to the level that i like to focus on

cheers to anyone who reads this, keep chuggging

in reply to: What’s the last movie you watched?

I watched Phone Booth last night. It’s kind of viewed as a modern classic but I honestly thought it was stupid. I guess the artistic value comes in the shots and the framing, and the nostalgia for the phone booth itself.

It wasn’t a terrible movie by any means, it’s just… The plot, and the dialogue, was dumb to me. It didn’t hook me. This guy wanted to shoot him because he was cheating on his wife? Or he WANTED to cheat on his wife?

But the shooter was just a random guy who had access to the phone booth? And he was willing to shoot people down in the street? And the cops thought the guy in the phone booth was the shooter the whole time?

And it took them all that time to find the real shooter, but they didn’t find him, even though he walked through the crime scene with a gun case at the end of the movie?

And the guy in the phone booth couldn’t just run away and zig zag? He just had to keep picking up the phone? Also, the repeated quote was stupid. “A ringing phone has to be answered, doesn’t it?” No, dude. It doesn’t!

I just couldn’t look past the plot. It’s not an interesting or believable plot. I thought the writing was poor. Yet people love it!

Maybe the point is to look past that the plot doesn’t make sense and just enjoy it for what it is. Overall, the movie Phone Booth is not for me.

    in reply to: Developer Log

Alright… i havent posted to the dev log in a while. But Extrachill.link launched at the end of May and has brought some life to this platform.

I have a few more ideas, i don’t know which one i’m going to build yet, but i wanted to write them down.

    Artist Merch Store

i know i said this idea was shelved, but now i’m thinking it would fit really well within the band platform. i am picturing a Merch tab on the band profile that allows artists to sell their own merch on the platform. i think i could set this up. it would take me about a solid month of tinkering.

The vision is that there will be a Merch tab on all the band profiles, and the products from each of them will be listed in the Extra Chill Merch Store.

Taxes are the biggest thing on my mind about this. Who collects the money. I guess there is probably a way to make the money go directly to the artist with a small cut to Extra Chill.

I’m going to think on this one a little more before i make any moves.

    EPK Builder

Sonic Bids has an EPK builder that has been their bread and butter for years. I think I could probably create the exact same system they have, but better and free. I’m just wondering if anybody even uses EPKs anymore. I rarely get sent them, or at least I rarely open them or see them. But if Sonic Bids is making a living off it, then it’s got to be in demand.

    Indie Tour (Master Tour Alternative)

I just found out about this app called Master Tour that is the industry standard for touring bands managing their day-to-day. To rebuild this would be an absolutely massive undertaking and I don’t know that I’m quite there yet. Master Tour is some very impressive and cool software based on the little demo i received.

Overall, I have a lot of ideas and this place will keep getting more advanced and useful over time. Thanks again to everyone who is here!

in reply to: A.I. in Music

Oh man, this aged wildly. This is just the beginning of the AI in music stuff.

I’m sure you’ve heard about the AI band that went viral, The Velvet Sundown.

I haven’t listened to their music, but somebody made serious bank getting AI music onto Spotify playlists.

    https://www.stereogum.com/2313949/ai-band-the-velvet-sundown-is-an-art-hoax-created-with-suno-spokesperson-admits/news/

Most people are outraged by this. I’ve noticed about myself that my “outrage tolerance” is pretty high for a lot of things. Especially having to do with AI. So I guess I just find it funny.

The app they used is called Suno.

This whole thing feeds oddly like a marketing campaign for Suno.
