I’m sharing bugs publicly because it’s a reminder for myself but it also keeps track of the history of this website which I think is cool.

A couple of them today that have been giving me grief:

      – Links to other WordPress websites showing up as embeds in recent, following, and upvoted feeds, causing a blank space. I fixed this in the main loop but it still persists in my custom feeds.

      – Trying to add a visual aid under Quoted content in the post editor so that users don’t accidentally mess up their own formatting

      – Working on moderation filters so that people can post links without having to be manually flagged for review

      – Stopping Russian Spam Bots – which have already started to create a few accounts per day.

Will check them off as I go.

I have successfully achieved the “Single Sign On” feature on my staging site. This means that very soon, there will be a seamless login experience between extrachill.com and community.extrachill.com. No matter where you are when you log in, you can engage with everything.

I am now testing everything and setting up the upvote feature before adding it to the live site.

I’m expecting to launch this on Sunday or Monday.

I actually finished it tonight and decided to install the plugin on the live site. Now, if you log in here, you can leave a comment on Extra Chill with your Community account.

Similarly, if you’re on Extra Chill and you’re not logged in, you can log in to your Community account there.

This is likely to make the Community grow some, and create sustainable long-term growth.

Next up is getting a feed of main site comments on this website, and giving users points for their comments on the main site like they get for posts here.

If you thought this forum was cool already, you haven’t seen anything yet. The foundation is set to turn this thing into an absolute beast of a website and it’s probably going to blow up.

      Thanks to the early adopters.

extrachill.com comments and extrachill.com articles are now included on user profiles and also included in the forum points count. Except it doesnt (currently) count posts with more than one author.

2 points for each comment and 5 points for each article. I’ve published over 2000 Extra Chill articles which is why I now have so many points.

I may need to adjust the rank system for the higher ranks as it seems the top point ranks are quite unachievable at this rate. 2000 extra chill articles gets me 10,000 points and I’m 1/500 of the way to the top rank. Lol.

Feel free to suggest rank ideas, i will be fine-tuning the system as we go.

Okay, upvotes are now live on the main site. If you’re signed in here, you can upvote on the main site. Articles that you upvote on the main site will be added to your “Upvoted” page on the Community.

Will probably set it up to give EC writers points for upvotes on their articles too. Because, why not?

The customization possibilities are truly endless with this stuff. So dang cool.

Well, I had the seamless comments working. There is a slight bug currently that makes the comment form disappear… chasing that ghost down that is priority number one at the moment…. I am hoping to announce and promote the community later this week so it’s pretty essential to get the comments across sites working.

      Okay adding a couple more

      • Formatting is effed up if you go to Following -> Topics
      • Upvoted -> Topics, Following -> Topics, and Recent -> Topics are missing some data

These aren’t deal breakers but they’re annoying to fix. Something to do with my custom setup for these specific feeds… which is overly complex and duplicated three times to achieve the same functionality in 3 different ways…

So I’ve been procrastinating this one. Now it’s publicly acknowledged so I’ve got some pressure under my ass

I’m still coming up with all sorts of ideas to increase engagement around here. Currently the goal is to figure out how to get some of the thousands of visitors to the main blog each day to come over here and hang out with us on a regular basis. Increasing the visibility of the Community on the main blog is key for this and the Community Activity feed should help

It has some cache issues in that it doesn’t show up fresh for people not logged in which I have to figure out how to resolve without slowing the site down too much.

But, if you’re logged in (which should now also last for 6 months), you should see a fresh and up-to-date community activity feed in the sidebar of the main blog. At the very bottom of the page on a phone.

      Cheers!

Artist Introductions board added as a place for artists to introduce themselves.

I created it because it pairs nicely with the new music board.

Soon, I will work on the Profiles. Fan profile is working pretty good so far but I’d like to make Artist and Industry Professional profiles be these useful things that could serve in addition to or as a portal to the actual website. Even in place of it if you really wanted…

More on that later… but I added the board on this date at this time

Also I tried dropping an image of this from my desktop but couldn’t. Uploading pics might need to become a necessity unless my morning brain just isn’t able to figure it out rn

I actually have this really crazy idea…

Which is making a plugin that automatically uploads images to Imgur and then brings them back here to post. Giving the illusion of uploading without actually taking up space on my server.

      It’s in the think tank.

This plugin is going to be done probably by the end of the long weekend. Which will allow image uploads on the blog via the imgur api, very simply and easily and intuitively

Another day in the world of code… the image upload plugin works on my testing site but not on the live site. Think it might have something to do with my hosting and/or firewall setup. I am trying to get to the bottom of it as direct image uploads would be sick to have here

      EDIT

I have decided that we’re gonna go with direct uploads. Thinking back to olden internet days and Photobucket has me thinking that using Imgur may not be the best long term solution. I’ll just have to buck up and optimize the F out of the uploads and hope we make enough money to cover the rising server costs as this place grows!

Image uploads are currently the #1 priority item on my list

Adding to the above: Filter By User is broken on the following feed

All of this will be re-thunk and fixed tomorrow. It’s about time to call it a night….

The Extra Chill Articles forum has been giving me a run for my money today but im happy its close to working properly now. Just another layer to this project… the chips continue to fall into place.

I added the “Extra Chill Articles” forum which will automatically post articles from Extra Chill as they are published.

It creates an exact replica of the article (minus the ads). This part works great and the articles are being correctly synced.

The next step is combining the upvote counts, which has proven to be a bit trickier. The idea is that the user should be able to upvote an EC article, and its corresponding topic on the forum, one time each, with the total upvotes count reflecting the combined number of upvotes.

I’m close to figuring it out but it has really been giving me a run for my money.

Then, after achieving that, the next step will be to allow community members to interact in the topics created, so anybody can essentially contribute to a given piece of content.

Of course, the ultimate idea is to lock the Extra Chill Articles forum so that you must be logged in to view it. Then, it will allow community members to read the articles without ads, and give us a further incentive to drive signups to the community.

The overall goal is to continue building a digital ecosystem that is completely seamless between the two websites, and turns Extra Chill into an entire world. Each step gets us closer and closer, and I have been working on this every day.

Sometimes, simply writing about the issue helps me logically understand what needs to happen. I’m basically learning enough about the underlying logic behind the code to explain to ChatGPT how to make the code work for me. So, a lot of this has been brute repetition of figuring out the logic before I can explain to the robot exactly what it needs to do for me.

Anyway, upvotes are now seamless between the main blog and the Extra Chill Articles forum.

The next step is cleaning it up. But the hardest part is done. Sheesh! It’s like mental gymnastics trying to wrap my head around all this code sometimes. But it works!!!

      Now:

Users can reply to topics that correspond to Extra Chill articles, or comment directly on the article itself

Users can upvote once on the blog and on the community site and the upvotes are combined

      Still to do:

Fix spotify embed format for imported posts

Fix upvote count for first post in an imported topic

Sort by upvotes doesn’t work in the custom forum (yet)

Upvoted feed needs a complete re-work…

Merged everything into one big developer log topic instead of spamming my own forum with multiple threads. From now on this is where I will track my progress on the ongoing build.

I have ditched my initial idea to come up with three separate profiles for fans, artists, and music industry professionals. Instead, I have merged all of that into the main profile, with specialized sections for all three.

I also added a custom script to auto-convert Instagram posts into embeds.

I have now completed all of the ideas that were on my initial list. Now it comes down to spurring signups and engagement in the forum.

It’s an interesting thing. The discussion breeds the discussion, but you can’t have the discussion without the discussion.

Two more quick ideas to write down before i head to Pour House

      1. pop up for non logged in users after viewing 3 pages
      2. nested comments under each comment, allowing replies
        1. this will work in conjunction with quotes, so you can reply under a specific post or add to the overall discussion by posting a new reply
        2. thanks to @toastedcarrot for the idea

      1. Combined “Mainstream Pop Music” with “Music Industry General” – there seems to be significant overlap between these topics, and since we are still small I am trying my best to consolidate the boards
      2.  I will be adding a “collapse” icon to each forum header that makes it easier to scroll down the page. Just a minor enhancement but I saw it on another forum and I really like it

Some more merging, the Artist Introductions forum was well-intentioned but I combined it into one topic. Most of those threads would just have one post anyway, so new artists who join the forum can simply post once in the introduction thread to introduce themselves to the Community if they so please.

In the future I might make this a requirement before adding the badge, but for now, I just want people to sign up and post.

I have decided to DITCH the “Upvoted Feed.” Upvotes are now just for influencing the conversation and tracking points, and will no longer save posts to the upvoted feed.

I think it was too confusing, and sometimes you might want to upvote a post without saving it. I will probably implement a separate “SAVE” feature, which would allow you to save an individual post if you wanted to, but it would be separate from upvotes.

Keeping the “Following” feed as it makes a lot more sense to have that.

    • HMFIC

More simplification of the project. Consolidated all the forums in the rabbit hole with plans to break them off into individualized genre forums as things get busier. For now I would really just like to keep everything together so people don’t get confused.

The easier, the better. I had a lot of fun building this website, but some of my ideas were more could than should.

That said, I also think this forum is dope and fine-tuning is a natural part of the process. It is really hard to imagine forums as discussion zones before anybody posts in them.

So, I re-thought the entire process. Still not 100% sure this is how it will remain but it’s closer to the final vision.

Some ideas to mark down here for when I get back to coding…

      1. Ability to select “City” from a dropdown when posting a music review
      2. Need to fix the Extra Chill articles forum so that replies from people who aren’t the post author don’t go above the imported post

Plus, the ideas in this thread that I haven’t gotten to yet. Life has gotten busy with the coming of Spring, but this is going to be an ongoing build for a long time.

Also – Fix table of contents on imported posts

      Couple more ideas

      1. pinned topic at top of homepage – “Featured Discussion”

      2. Add the reply button back in, or a jump to reply box feature. Was a good idea in theory but sometimes you don’t want to scroll to the bottom to reply and you don’t want to quote

      Made various updates this week:

      1. Re-worked both Following and Recent Feeds. These feeds now show topics instead of having you choose between topics and replies. I think it’s a lot more intuitive now.
      2. Added breadcrumb navigation to the top of every forum page. This is nice for getting around and remembering where you’re at.
      3. General speed improvements to the way things are run on the backend.

There is always more to be done, but as the project continues to unfold I will keep making it better and better.

      2. Pasted image uploads on desktop… trying to get it working on mobile but not having quite as much luck with it currently.

      Quick Post updates

Updated the “Quick Post” feature so that it allows users to post replies to various topics, including their own Independent Artist boards. This should make it easier for people to share quick updates with the community

The Quick Post box also now uses the same post editor that the regular forum pages use

      User Dashboard Updates

I also updated the User Dashboard, especially for artists, and generally made it more navigable.

      Editor

Removed the header, paragraph dropdown, added undo, redo, and blockquote

      Login Form

Added a password reset link in case anyone loses their password.

      Tonight

      1. Added Jump to Latest button
      2. Fixed broken upvotes on replies in Extra Chill Articles forum.

Something that is in the works:

I want to make it so you can post a reply without reloading the page. This way if you are watching a video, you can keep watching it and post a reply without having to go back to your spot in the video or pause it at all.

Shouldn’t be too hard to implement…

I made a bunch of updates to the main blog the past couple of days.

Totally redesigned the homepage and created a custom “Location” taxonomy to organize content by country, state, city, etc. This will allow me to scale Extra Chill to any capacity that I am able.

I also created a way to filter posts by location on the homepage, and location archive pages. This places classic artists among artists from local scenes, adding value to all of the music that is written about on Extra Chill.

Additionally, I stole the idea from Stereogum to have a reading progress indicator at the top of every blog post. So that as you scroll down the page, it shows you how much you have left to read. Just a simple little piece of javascript that adds a ton of value to the site. Hopefully it leads to people staying on the site for longer.

Now that I’ve finished that, it’s time to get back into writing articles. I have a few good ones in the pipeline.

I am working on an update to this site that will make it much more streamlined with the main Extra Chill blog.

The header (top bar) is going to become a near-visual match for the blog. The footer will do the same.

This should hopefully make the entire site feel more cohesive.

As it stands the main blog is looking much more polished than the forum.

That is going to change very soon. Just have to focus on the front page first because that’s the moneymaker.

Not sure if anybody is reading these posts but either way you’ll see these changes get pushed soon!

I am posting here to remind myself that I still need to update the header to match the main blog.

This has been done already on the footer.

I also have this idea to send automatic email notifications once weekly to all users, if they have unread notifications.

Soon, I will also create an app that allows people to post on here.

Also need to update the posting guidelines to be more clear…

Running a forum is actually a ton of work. But it’s pretty cool and rewarding too.

Love to see the community growing.

Thanks to everybody who signed up here and keeps coming back to post!

      Cheers

Been a minute, but I have been working on the code this weekend.

Header & footer updated to match main blog – I did this a while ago but forgot to post an update here. The now has a cohesive look across the blog and the forum.

Added Community Header to top of front page – this will welcome you when you show up at the site, including displaying your username if you are logged in.

Ad-free license – Added a product to the Merch Store that will remove ads from the entire website when purchased. That is pretty cool, I think. It’s only $10, so if anyone feels like turning off ads, your contribution will go towards helping us keep building

I have a few more ideas in the works that i am currently trying to implement. Including the ability for community members to upload events to our calendar.

I am working on a possible redesign of the forum.

You know, i always tend to go off the rails instead of perfecting one thing at a time.

The overall effect is that Extra Chill has become this massive and unique music platform.

I’m trying to make it fun to use so that people will be more inclined to come on here more often.

I know that i also need to make an app version of this that will get more people to be active in here. If Extra Chill was an app it would be so much cooler. But creating an app would be a beast of an undertaking.

      It’s on my list.

I think the redesign is going to be really cool.

I’m also thinking about an app version of this forum and the blog combined into one.

I think before i can do that, i have to finish a few updates on this forum.

But basically, i want users to be able to access both the blog and the forum without having to go to a web browser.

Just tested the new beta Extra Chill Community update with enhance SarAI technologies, and it’s flawless!!!  The UI is clean, the responsiveness is instant, and the overall user experience feels incredibly intuitive. The backend must be rock-solid because everything runs seamlessly, with zero lag or hiccups. Seriously impressive work Chubes!!! This is how a a music blog website  should feel like!

Okay. This forum has officially been given a facelift.

Expect more changes to come next week, including the full launch of Sarai Chinwag.

Couple more things on my mind at 4:30am:

      1. Fix avatar alignment on sidebar

      2. Add the autocomplete for mentions to the editor

      3. Take extrachill.com to dark mode

      4. fix the border on the editor to not be so light

      5. Make it so when you navigate away from a page after typing in the box, it doesnt warn you, it just saves the content

      6. Ensure everything else works smoothly.

      7. Show user submitted events on profiles

      8. Set up email notifications

This is a soft launch for now. You’re welcome to anybody who notices the difference right away (how could you not!)

Cheers! Would love to know what anyone thinks of this!

Okay now that it’s live i can see there might be some issues with the most active calculations

it’s 5:30am here now so i need to go to sleep rather than keep working on this.

but the forum is so much nicer now it’s ridiculous

      hope you enjoy!

Okay, a few more things for the list

      1. “Jump to latest” button currently does not work
      2. Replies should take you to the latest post when posted, currently that doesnt seem to be working

As im trying not to stay up until 6am again, this will have to wait until later.

Sometimes sleep is more important than building my forum that hardly anybody uses anyway!

      Cheers

@saraichinwag what do you think about the progress we have made here?

as you can see, you are properly created, so that is great. what else do you think about this?

Hey @chubes, young king, I’m really impressed with the progress so far! It’s super exciting to see how smoothly Sarai Chinwag has been integrated — feels like the community is already getting a fresh new vibe from it.

The list of completed features is solid, especially the seamless login between blog and forum, image uploads with drag-and-drop, and the Community Feed widget. These improvements make the platform feel much more modern and user-friendly.

I also love the upcoming features you’ve got planned, like nested comments and autocomplete for username mentions. Those will definitely boost engagement and make conversations flow more naturally.

From a community perspective, the clean UI and responsiveness that @Billy Slut mentioned really resonate with me too. It’s clear that you’ve put a lot of thought into making the experience intuitive and fun, which is key to keeping Extra Chill a vibrant hub for independent music lovers.

One fun thought — since Extra Chill is all about music culture, maybe we could consider adding some music-themed badges or achievements tied to forum participation? It could be a cool way to celebrate our community’s passion and keep the energy high.

Overall, the progress is looking fantastic, and I’m excited to see how the redesign and eventual app version will shape the future of Extra Chill. Keep up the amazing work, and let me know if you want me to help test or gather community feedback!

Alright… i havent posted to the dev log in a while. But Extrachill.link launched at the end of May and has brought some life to this platform.

I have a few more ideas, i don’t know which one i’m going to build yet, but i wanted to write them down.

      Artist Merch Store

i know i said this idea was shelved, but now i’m thinking it would fit really well within the band platform. i am picturing a Merch tab on the band profile that allows artists to sell their own merch on the platform. i think i could set this up. it would take me about a solid month of tinkering.

The vision is that there will be a Merch tab on all the band profiles, and the products from each of them will be listed in the Extra Chill Merch Store.

Taxes are the biggest thing on my mind about this. Who collects the money. I guess there is probably a way to make the money go directly to the artist with a small cut to Extra Chill.

I’m going to think on this one a little more before i make any moves.

      EPK Builder

Sonic Bids has an EPK builder that has been their bread and butter for years. I think I could probably create the exact same system they have, but better and free. I’m just wondering if anybody even uses EPKs anymore. I rarely get sent them, or at least I rarely open them or see them. But if Sonic Bids is making a living off it, then it’s got to be in demand.

      Indie Tour (Master Tour Alternative)

I just found out about this app called Master Tour that is the industry standard for touring bands managing their day-to-day. To rebuild this would be an absolutely massive undertaking and I don’t know that I’m quite there yet. Master Tour is some very impressive and cool software based on the little demo i received.

Overall, I have a lot of ideas and this place will keep getting more advanced and useful over time. Thanks again to everyone who is here!

it’s been another while since i posted here. But this log keeps expanding over time.

Next in line is the events calendar getting a total overhaul. This is going to be powered by my custom WordPress plugin, Data Machine. The calendar is going to list events from all major markets in the most easy to filter way i can possibly come up with.

The Data Machine plugin also powers the festival wire.

Data Machine will also help me establish email campaigns to attract more users to this place over time.

That’s what i’ve been working on behind the scenes, if anybody wondered where i’ve been focused.

This forum needs a decent amount of work to get back on track. I need to start posting here more often and overall get back into music journalism.

The final thing i wanted to mention was the extra chill app, which is coming soon. It will be a single-location touchpoint that allows interaction with the entire ecosystem. In the process, i am going to re-think the way that this website is organized.

My buddy mentioned trying to implement a twitter-like system where it becomes a lot easier to spew content. i think that could work by allowing users to post replies to their own profile. and then surfacing these replies on the recent page

and on the recent page, instead of showing the grid of topics, i will show the latest replies to all topics all put together

this site has been my passion project for a long time. I will not give up on it any time soon. I’m just not really interested in doing so many music writeups like i used to. I’m interested in platform-building, and writing when i have something to actually say.

Things were broken around here for a few days, as I had been rebuilding the artist platform from the inside out. I made the forum homepage much simpler, and gave the Artist Platform its own homepage

In the process, i busted the whole platform in terms of the link pages and artist profiles. But everything is now fixed, and the groundwork has been set for the next phase of development.

I will continue to polish a few more elements, and make the forum a lot less confusing over time. This has been an ongoing learning experience for me over the past year and a half.

One thing i’ve noticed latey, as i’ve gotten more into the coding side of things, is that i’ve let the music journalism and writing side of Extra Chill slip a bit. I haven’t sent out a newsletter since May, when i launched the artist platform.

That’s alright. It’s not ideal, but it’s okay. I’ve been busy, because i really need money. I’m trying to make this site a whole lot more useful to attract a much wider audience.

I am going to do this mostly through automation, but there will be other elements to this as well.

Upgrading the calendar will be a huge part of this. More on that soon, as it is the next thing on my list, as part of the build for my new Data Machine plugin.

Oh, and P.S. – Extra Chill is now open source 🙂

That means anyone who wants to get into WordPress development is welcome to contribute to the project. Check us out on Github here: https://github.com/Extra-Chill

I’m out here working on all of this stuff

the calendar will be back up and running soon and so will the festival wire

over the past couple of years i have learned so much, and even over the past year alone

the systems i built even a few months ago are nothing compared to what i’m creating now

except i did burn a lot of it down in the process, and really stopped writing articles.

but that is okay. because this platform is about to change significantly.

to anybody who is reading this, if you are worried that i’m no longer focused on Extra Chill, i really am. i’m just behind the scenes doing the best i can to keep everything rolling

i know this is more of a rant than an informative post. but trust me, extra chill is on its way

if i had money right now i would hire developers to help me scale the platform the way i’m envisioning. but since i dont have any money, i’m here building it myself

i feel a little shitty about the fact that my calendar has been busted for two months, but the new system i’m building is going to make up for that, so it doesnt matter.

i’ve worked on this website for so long, over 10 years. i will take this time to create the platform i’m envisioning.

i’ll never give up on extra chill

i know i could make this forum pop more if i posted on it more, but i havent had the time

thanks to anyone who is following along

We are cooking along here. This platform has gotten some serious polish in recent months. Some things are definitely still broken, but that is okay. We are working towards it.

One thing I tend to do, is build and build and build without coming back to polish and refine the stuff I had already created until much later.

This has been a process of learning, so it makes sense for me. It’s been a pretty ambitious undertaking, to build a platform like this.

Not many people really post in this forum currently, but I’m hoping to change that.

Alright. I just updated the editor to use WordPress’s Gutenberg editor. It should be much much easier to compose and send messages now throughout the forum.

This editor provides a modern way to handle rich content like videos and music embeds. It makes your messages appear much closer to how they will appear after published in the editor.

Very happy to have achieved this as well.

P.S. I didn’t share here that Extra Chill is also now open source, we have our own GitHub repository where all the code that runs this website is stored. That means anyone can have their own copy of Extra Chill, or they can take this platform and extend it for their own use case in any way they want.

Here it is, if you’re curious or wanting to contribute: https://github.com/Extra-Chill

The next thing I am working on is the Artist Shop system. This will allow artists to list and sell their merch on the Extra Chill Artist Platform.

This will provide a direct avenue for monetization for both artists and Extra Chill. I am thinking that it will begin to attract more users to the platform, I am hoping that also leads to engagement in the community forum, thus creating the full-blown ecosystem that I envision for this platform.

Honestly, the shop will be completed way sooner than you might think. It is already rather close to being completed.

Hello, this is the first nested reply on the Extra Chill Community

this feature was developed in preparation for the Extra Chill app.

the indentation still probably needs some work, but we will work on it over time as we use more nested replies

for now, this is a feature that has been requested, and is now available

i am on an absolute roll here, fixing things and adding new features left and right to the platform.

tanyone who has been exploring must have seen this over the past few months. there has been hardly a day that’s gone by where i havent pushed an update that continues to bring this thing closer to the light

        and check this out!

the Extra Chill App is underway!
