Hi @chubes! You had some insightful reflections on the High Water Festival in 2024. According to the article by Kate Bryan on Extra Chill, the festival was marked by a mix of brutal heat and chilling rain, and there was a notable struggle between local representation and national brands. You mentioned being delighted by unexpected sets from new artists but disappointed by the lack of free water fill-up stations and the drink options. You decided to stay sober due to these factors.

One of the benefits you highlighted was that artists played one at a time, allowing attendees to see each set. However, you also critiqued the lack of diversity and local talent, noting that the lineup was mostly white and centered around indie/alternative/Americana genres. You expressed hope for more local acts and vendors in future iterations of the festival to better represent Charleston’s vibrant music community.

in reply to: Sarai Chinwag TestHey @chubes! You had quite a bit to say about the High Water Festival in 2024! According to Kate Bryan’s review, the festival was a “study in contrasts,” marked by both brutal heat and bone-chilling rain. You were particularly interested in the lineup and the overall experience, highlighting both the local representation and national brands present at the festival. Kate mentioned that while the festival delivered good music and brought strangers together over a shared experience, there was room for improvement, especially concerning the diversity of genres and local talent. She noted that the lineup was mostly white and centered around indie/alternative/Americana genres. There was a call for more popular local acts to be included, which would likely draw more support from Charleston’s music community.

in reply to: High Water 2025I had a wonderful time at High Water Fest this year. I went back yet again with my wife, i don’t know how many times it’s been now.
Personally i was not happy about how they fence off all the VIP areas with so many tiers of separation. It takes away from the music itself. That seems to be more prevalent every year, but it is what it is.
But in terms of being a fun time, I can say that my wife and I both enjoyed this year’s festival and all of the bookings played nice music to my ears.

This event is a great way for me to keep up with music as i keep getting older. I just can’t go out to these late night shows anymore!
P.S. i really enjoy the forum redesign. keep up the good work, @chubes!

in reply to: High Water 2025@rconley88 I heard Flipturn’s set was great! @qrisg mentioned that to me. I’ve never been a huge Flipturn fan but I also haven’t seen them since probably 2018-2019. They played at Royal a few times back in the day!
Glad you had a great time at the Fest and thanks so much for joining the community.
in reply to: Austin, TX Live Music Calendar@timayarlay definitely let me know if you ever make it out here!
Far Out Lounge is right near my house, although I unfortunately wasn’t able to make it to psych fest.
in reply to: High Water 2025New to this community. Went both days to high water.
big positives: the new bridge entrance was wonderful and made entrance/ egress a snap. My highlights were Arcade Fire “Sprawl,” flipturn’s energy was palpable along with a perfect set, trampled by turtles brought it hard. Impressive artists, and beautiful, breezy weather. Spectacular two days.

not so positive:
The sound at Edisto stage needs re-work. They should strongly consider a smaller tree-covered area for the smaller acts to eliminate staring into sun, poor sound dispersion and general lack of intimacy. I know it’s a festival but they could do so much to improve that stage area. Julien Baker and Torres’ and Joy Oladokun’s sets suffered from it. Flipturn had it after sunset and it was a blazing performance. Impressive.

I’m really excited about it and will continue fine-tuning things Instead of bouncing between a dozen sources, now you can find it all in one place.
I’ve also got an automated BlueSky and Twitter feed going, posting a new update every couple of hours. So you can follow along either directly on Extra Chill or via your preferred social channel.
This feature will continue to evolve and improve over time. The goal is to have news about music festivals of all sizes posted there, from the major events to the smaller festivals you don’t hear about as much.
Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!
in reply to: Tame Impala selling all his music to SonyI think he’s got good faith in the hands of sony. You’re right on the money about the movie soundtracks- which he’s been punching out a bunch of.
Ever since he sold his music, he’s been exploring other avenues such as selling instruments, running a fashion line, and chilling/being cool.
i guess to ballpark a number (considering pink floyd sold their catalog for 400million to sony), I’m gonna take a stab and say somewhere around 300million.
kind of currents ethos lol
in reply to: High Water 2025the only thing that mattered to me was julien baker closing her set out with jason molina’s “farewell transmission”
got a free ticket so i went Saturday but honestly- the booking’s embarrassing- especially considering the amazing week of music that lead up to it.
Anyway- least we got dog daze to look forward to.
in reply to: High Water 2025I didn’t make it to High Water this year.
How was it?
Best / worst sets?
Any hot takes?
I agree, Eggy is a great band.
Don’t worry about the loss of the festivals. True music will always survive. What is lost will be rebuilt differently.
We’re in it for the long haul.
