Kevin Parker sold all of his songwriter’s catalog to Sony- past, present, and future. This is crazy! Maybe it’s an admission of submission to the age of AI? Maybe it was just- A LOT- of money?
i’m curious what yall might have to say about it. i’ve been a huge tame impala fan since my teenage years and seriously credit his music for getting me into music as a whole. I even handed my professor a CD of Currents at graduation.
You know, I’ve thought about this for a while since you posted it and came close to responding a few times.
I think it was definitely a lot of money. A LOT of money, for sure. He’s one of the most successful artists of the past decade.
It could be for any number of reasons. One thing is for certain, he will never have to work another day in his life. I do think he will continue to release music.
It’s tough for anyone to say what they would do in his position. He did create the music, and selling the rights to it doesn’t take that away from him. It probably helps a lot with managing it. Also will result in Tame Impala’s music being used in more movies and stuff down the line.
What do you think about it?
I think he’s got good faith in the hands of sony. You’re right on the money about the movie soundtracks- which he’s been punching out a bunch of.
Ever since he sold his music, he’s been exploring other avenues such as selling instruments, running a fashion line, and chilling/being cool.
i guess to ballpark a number (considering pink floyd sold their catalog for 400million to sony), I’m gonna take a stab and say somewhere around 300million.
kind of currents ethos lol
