I just played a show at Tin Roof with Brett on the bill. My first time meeting him, he was a really nice supportive guy. He played a great solo set with foot drums!

@mountaindog1972 Yesssss I love that song so much. I’ve listened to Magick Mother Invocation —> Master Builder —> A Sprinkling of Clouds probably 83649 times.

Lately I’ve turned to Natural Snow Buildings for late nights listening. Their album Shadow Kingdom is like a world of it’s own. Almost 3 hrs long.

A couple tracks that are good to start with to get an idea of the sound:

Long time Gimp user and lover here, checking in 🙂 Photoshop is for old saggy people!

@chubes I’ve read 10 of them so far over a couple days (I don’t like to read too many poems at a time) and I’m enjoying em! Really dark stuff, down to earth and gritty. I can feel the struggle in the words. Oh yeah and the code you wrote to display the poems is pretty slick.

I agree with you about being able to revisit old things. Sometimes I get new insights from the old stuff.

And yeah it’s a damn pleasure to be here participating! I love boards like this, and it’s really sweet to have one centered around Charleston music.

Woah Smile is a song and a half! Feels good

I’m gonna check this out because I love poetry, and it’s great to see another person writing it, let alone putting together a collection. I’ll let you know what I think.

I write too, and I’m pretty much done with my third poetry book. The words are all there, I’m just adding some illustrations.

Anyway, I don’t wanna steal your thunder. Congrats on the collection (people always say congrats when you finish something like that for some reason)!

Hey thanks for posting this. I listened to this whole album today. First time to the band. It’s a great album. I can tell they put a lotta love into it. Every song has it’s own distinct personality, and the pacing is spot on. I really like the tone of the vocals. It sounds excellent on a production level, too. There’s just the right amount of layering and little instrumental bits to keep it interesting and invite mulitple listens, but it retains a simple feeling at its core. I’ll be coming back to it for sure.

If there was one artist I could pick as a #1 favorite, it would probably be Can. This version of Paperhouse is a good one

Yep it’s perfect. The fact that he died right after he released it shows how much the artistic expression was a part of him and how much he invested in it. Like, he knew that he was dying the whole time he was making the album, and then it was like one last big exhale, like a big “WHEW!” and then that was it. Gone. Beautiful.

The beats are obviously incredible, but I think it’s the transitions that take it to the next level. The record keeps throwing new stuff at you at every turn, and with each beat change you get that extra burst of “woah music is amazing” kinda feeling. (Guided by Voices’ early 90’s output hits the same feeling)

Idk if you’ve heard it but Madlib’s Beat Konducta 5 is a tribute to Dilla and uses similar styles, an excellent beat tape

I found him fairly recently too and it was like I’d found a big missing piece to the whole “classic” rock picture. I’m not even exactly sure what it was but it’s like his stuff occupies this space that kinda lurks quietly underneath a lot of other bands and artists.

And Naturally is such a good album holy hell. I’ve explored bits of other albums but have yet to really dive in to them. I love this sort of low key groovy stuff. Plus obviously his guitar playing is just perfectly tastful and has such a fine tone.

@chubes Yes! Rollin with the Flow is superb. I recently stumbled upon a free copy the Charlie Rich record and the original tune is sweet too

Yeah he’s just so effortlessly powerful and complex. And he mantains the groove too. There’s a pocket to his playing that usually gets lost in technical drumming.
