Today, Whitehall release a new single called “Good Guy”, their first of 2020 and also their first since signing with Common Ground Collective earlier this year. The single made its debut yesterday alongside a music video on American Songwriter, where it was also revealed that the band is working on a follow-up to their 2018 full-length debut, Ocean Fiction.
The last time I wrote about Whitehall was around this time last year, when they released “Learning To Dance”. Back then I pointed out that Whitehall seemed to be missing something without the presence of the saxophone in the band, which had been one of their main appeals right from the start.
“Good Guy”, however, does things a little differently. Here they pass on the dance rock in favor of something a bit grittier, and I think it’s the right direction for them to take. It sounds like they’ve been listening to Weezer, which I think is probably true, regardless of whether or not they wanted to sound like Weezer. Either way, I dig this tune and hope to hear more like this from Whitehall.
