Earlier this week, the High Divers announced their new EP, Ride With You, and premiered the video for the album’s title track via Glide Magazine. Ride With You was produced by Sadler Vaden, who is from South Carolina and currently plays guitar with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, and has previously played with Drivin N Cryin. The new High Divers EP follows their 2018 release, Chicora, as well as a little EP of Christmas originals that they released this past holiday season. It will see release on Friday, June 7th.
The High Divers have always been a rock band, but never before have they embraced rock ‘n’ roll in the studio setting as much as they have with “Ride With You”. The guitar tone is especially indicative of this, and naturally that’s where Sadler’s influence shines brightest. We don’t hear the motown influence that was woven throughout Chicora, but instead the High Divers have pulled their sound straight from their roots. That means guitar-driven rock with a Southern twist, done more simply and honestly than ever before.
Lyrically, “Ride With You” is about this longing to get away, and not caring exactly where you end up. The music video adds another layer to that, depicting a couple who stumble across an extremely large quantity of marijuana while cruising the waterways on a Carolina Skiff. They keep that marijuana, sell it, and then end up with a ransacked house and that longing in turn becomes a need to get away. The video was created by cinematographer Zach Hellmuth, who co-directed it with Mary Alice Mitchell of the High Divers.
