SUSTO – “Summertime”

This week, SUSTO released “Summertime,” the second single off the band’s upcoming album Time in the Sun. It’s a mellow track that calls to mind a sun-drenched afternoon deep in the heat of summer. “Summertime” opens with playful guitar, quickly followed by rhythmic percussion. Singer Justin Osborne’s voice is cool and low as he employs the classic SUSTO trick of storytelling through song.

The lyrics indulge in reminiscence, looking back on a time with a certain person — “It’s been so long since I’ve seen your face / since I held your hand / since I made you laugh,” Osborne sings. The image of a “song skipping on a burnt CD” furthers the sense of nostalgia. “And now I know, we were only a season,” he cries out in the post-chorus, an appropriate line for an end-of-summer song grappling with the idea of ephemeral romance.

While themes of sentimentality abound in “Summertime,” the sound is upbeat and breezy. If you aren’t lucky enough to be seeing SUSTO at the Windjammer tonight, keep your eyes peeled for Time in the Sun, set to drop on October 29th, with at least another single or two coming before then.
