SUSTO & Heyrocco at Music Farm on Saturday, February 25th, 2017 (Concert Review)
Published: March 2, 2017SUSTO at Music Farm. Photo: Kyle Kilgo When SUSTO and Heyrocco announced their tour together this past winter, I knew it was not to be missed. Two great bands from Charleston touring together is just an exciting thing to hear about, and I was especially stoked after I got a chance to listen to SUSTO’s sophomore album & I’m Fine Today, which was the occasion for the tour. I was not surprised to hear that their show at the Music Farm last Saturday night was completely sold out. Below you’ll find some of my thoughts on the show as well as some dope photos taken by Kyle Kilgo.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Heyrocco shows are always a party, and on Saturday night they certainly lived up to my expectations. They came out shirtless (as usual) and rocked renditions of songs off Teenage Movie Soundtrack (which they’ve referred to as “middle school”), Waiting On Cool (high school), and closed with a song off a new record that they have in the works (dropout music), “Mexico”. They’ve been working on the new record for a bit now, with recording sessions out in Cali and at their own house with hometown hero Matt Zuttell.

Photo: Kyle Kilgo There was the beginnings of a mosh pit during Heyrocco’s set, but it was quickly broken up by Music Farm security before it could really get going, which was a disappointment to everyone involved but Nate Rocco made up for it with a stage dive and crowd surf, and not to mention a great performance. He’s been quoted saying he loves to see mosh pits at his shows, so I’m sure seeing the crowd pushing eachother around got him pumped and probably prompted the stage dive. Heyrocco did an awesome job getting everyone hyped up and I fully expect to someday see them playing their own sold out headliner at the Music Farm.

After Heyrocco finished up, SUSTO came on stage to a fully packed out Music Farm filled with nearly 800 people, some of whom have watched the band grow from their very inception, and others who just got on board when they heard “Jah Werx” a few months back. Regardless of when each person found out about SUSTO, the common strand was that everyone there knew the words to most of the songs, and made it known by belting the lyrics along with Justin who I’ll admit has a much better voice than 95% of people in the crowd, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was the feeling of togetherness in the crowd, how everyone was rooting for SUSTO and is thankful that they’ve given us such great music to sing and rock along with.

Photo: Kyle Kilgo SUSTO opened their set with the first three songs off & I’m Fine Today and then went into a blend of picks from both records, including my personal favorite, “Cosmic Cowboy”. Somewhere toward the end of the set, Justin thanked the crowd for being there for their first ever headlining show at Music Farm, and for being with them along the road to where they currently stand. After the show the band left Charleston for the second half of their & I’m Fine Today tour, where they will be supporting The Lumineers at shows all across the country, starting last night in Texas. The only downside to this whole thing is that they might be too big to play at Royal without making it a surprise show, or playing in the parking lot.
