Stop Light Observations released a new single, “smooth little operator,” this week. It’s the latest tune from the band following “Trajic Majic,” which dropped in May.
“smooth little operator” presents a sound that is, well, smooth. The bass line is groovy, the beat is slick, and Will Blackburn croons with his characteristic swagger.
The lyrics describe a dreaded realization in the game of love: the moment when you figure out that the other person doesn’t play by the rules. “I’m begging / Baby don’t you say goodbye,” Blackburn repeats toward the end of the song, but in a manner that reads more playful than mournful.
According to an Instagram post from the band, “The lyrics came quickly and tell an all too common story of star-crossed love.”
