Last week, Greenville rapper and producer Shyland Flowers released the music video for “’96 Lex” featuring WVN off his recent album …And Flowers For All, which dropped earlier this month. The video was released in advance of his performance last weekend at Fall for Greenville, and was directed by fellow Greenville creative Keiz Ali and shot by Sean King.
Shyland Flowers is co-founder of the hip-hop collective True King Music Group and one of the most promising and dedicated up-and-coming rappers in South Carolina right now. His sound and flow feels old school, yet his lyrics are forward-looking, both personally and politically. It’s like he tore a page out of the books of great ones like Jay-Z (whom he references here), but is doing his own thing rather than trying to emulate them.
