Charleston rapper R Dotta, the Charleston City Paper’s 2020 Up-And-Comer of the Year dropped his new EP, Season 2 on Friday. The EP follows 2020’s 2.2 Pounds EP and contains 5 tracks that continue to showcase R Dotta’s lyrical prowess. The lyrics reference the current cultural climate in a way that feels insightful and especially apt for a project titled Season 2.
The album opens with “Last Season,” an intro that serves as a fitting starting point, setting the tone for the multifaceted tracks to come. Artists Bluflame James and Fe Sensi are also featured on Season 2, collaborating on songs “On” and “Cold Game,” respectively. Snippets and clips of interviews and people talking are interspersed in some of the songs, as is gospel singing on the track “Goldie.” The album reaches a gratifying conclusion with the track “Black Owned.”
You can catch R Dotta rapping live at “Keep it Gullah” at the Royal American with Ray DeeZy and McKenzie Eddy on September 25.
