Premiere: Solar Punches – ‘The Qualm Factory’

Solar Punches is a new dance-punk band based out of Charleston, and this morning we’re happy to be the first to share their debut album, The Qualm Factory. The band consists of Kane Jordan, Alex Brouwer, McCarthy Fitch, Brooks Hannon, Taylor Moody, and Chad Shealy, and started when members of the experimental South Carolina band the Mulberry Collective recorded some music that didn’t quite fit in their established vibe, but they still felt was worth pursuing.

The album is a driving, electronic-based force filled with elements taken from across the musical spectrum. The vocals are as much of an instrument as the rest of the mix, and are layered within the wall of sound to help keep the force in motion. The Qualm Factory is pieced together smoothly so that it feels like one long song rather than a series of separate entities, and it makes for an interesting listen.

Solar Punches will play the album in its entirety for the first time at a house show in Charleston this coming Saturday, June 29th. Also playing are local bands Canopy Hands and Orange Doors, as well as Asheville band Stayne. Hit up Solar Punches on Instagram @solar.punches_ to get the address.
