Premiere: Rose Hotel – “Expansion” (Video)
    Published: November 1, 2021

When she’s not busy touring with SUSTO or Faye Webster (opening for Wilco, I might add), Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Jordan Reynolds also records and releases music with her own project called Rose Hotel. She’s currently preparing to release a new EP called The House That We Knew, via Nashville’s Cold Lunch Recordings. This morning we’re happy to premiere the lead single, “Expansion”, right here on Extra Chill.

“Expansion” is mellow and dreamy post-folk with introspective lyrics that explore a feeling of hard-won growth and as the title suggests, expansion. There are of course, setbacks along the way, less-than-ideal moments in the never-ending struggle to achieve your own idea of growth, both within a relationship and within yourself. “Silence isn’t just absence / silence is penance for doing you harm,” Reynolds sings.

The song features strings and piano arranged by Chicago multi-instrumentalist Macie Stewart (Ohmme, Whitney, SZA), and also features ambient artist Rich Ruth on electric guitar, composer Chris Childs on piano, and Breshon Martzall on background vocals. It was produced with repeat collaborator Graham Tavel, who produced first Rose Hotel LP I Will Only Come When Its a Yes (2019) and EP Conversations (2019).

“Expansion” also comes with a meditative music video featuring trapeze artist Kat Saxon, who performs an impressive interpretive dance while suspended from the ceiling, with moves that get more and more complicated as the song progresses and builds in layers. Jordan herself directed the video, and it was shot by cinematographer Nic Huey.

Watch the video for “Expansion” by Rose Hotel below, and stay tuned for the rest of The House That We Knew coming soon.
