This morning, Charleston dystopian rock band Never Better surprise released their debut EP, Heavy Heart. The EP was released via Warm Noise Records, who also represent Greenville post punk band, Gláss. Heavy Heart is just four songs, coming in at 15 minutes in length, and could give you the dose of sad, heavy rock that you’re looking for in these times of quarantine. There’s so much going on in the world that you probably didn’t even realize that today is the first day of Spring, and hey, Tuesday was St. Patrick’s Day.
Never Better is led by Charleston’s DJ Edwards, founder of Real South Records and designated Math Man here at Extra Chill. DJ recruits a rotating cast of Charleston musicians to perform the music he writes for Never Better, which for the recording of this EP included Brett Nash (Secret Guest), Avery Greeson (Whitehall), Jeremy Hunton (Bizness Suit), and Trav 420 (Community Pool). The songs were recorded at a few studios around SC, including Coast Records, Jam Room, and The Lab. The main man himself, Matthew Garber of For The Record handled mastering.
When the Coronavirus pandemic ends, I recommend you go see Never Better live. They had just announced a tour before mother nature tossed our world up into the air, and they join the endless list of artists who have been impacted by this global crisis. And I’m not just saying that because DJ makes my spreadsheets. Never Better has an actual gong and a ton of energy, and they always have some over-the-top stunt planned. Last time it was hopping up onto the bar at Big Gun, and I’m sure next time it will be just as ridiculous.
