Earlier this week, Charleston dystopian rock band Never Better released two new protest songs, “Anti-Pacifism” and “Kill Calhoun”. The songs also happened to be released on the glorious day on which the John C. Calhoun statue was removed from Marion Square. According to Never Better frontman and songwriter DJ Edwards, he had already been planning to release the songs that day, and it coincidentally was the day of the removal.
With “Anti-Pacifism”, DJ channels his inner Conor Oberst for an acoustic song that sounds oddly similar to “Lua” by Bright Eyes. “Kill Calhoun” is an angry punk song all about, you guessed it, killing John C. Calhoun, removing his statue, and dismantling white supremacy in Charleston.
