Yesterday, McKenzie Eddy dropped a very good new single on her Bandcamp called “Ode To Earthlings”. It follows “Stingray”, released in August thus marked McKenzie’s return to releasing music as a solo artist after a 6 year break. The tune was produced by Eddy’s husband and collaborator Elliott A. Smith, with some help from Wolfgang Zimmerman, who also plays drums on the song. It features a full band arrangement that also includes Jimmie Choate on guitar and bass.
“Ode To Earthlings” is indie pop with a slight R&B lean. The beat moves nice and slow while McKenzie’s ethereal voice sings of heartbreak and picking up the pieces to start over again. There’s a hopeful element to it, and Eddy seems somewhat accepting of the pain behind her and looks forward towards a future with a healthier relationship with the self.
McKenzie shared the song along with a moody visual on her Instagram. Here’s what she had to say about it:
“Putting this out into the world today seemed like the right way to step into my own personal new year, a birthday present to myself, if you will ????. Thank you to my husband for writing this song with me and collaborating with me on the visual, to my friends who worked with me on crafting this sound, and to all of you for listening. I love you.”
