    Matthew Kilby – “Sunday”
    Published: September 26, 2021

Charleston musician and high school music teacher Matthew Kilby released a new single, “Sunday,” this weekend. If he set out to create the sonic-embodiment of a serene Sunday morning, he succeeded — the track is a breezy indie-pop tune that you want to listen to as you laze in bed.

“Sunday” begins as an instrumental track, with no words —  just some delicate piano, light percussion, pensive guitar, and what sounds like the chime of a xylophone — until about one minute in. Then comes Kilby’s voice singing slowly: “Rain on the roof / your hand in mine.”

The lyrics continue on in a cozy, romantic direction. Kilby leaves space in between each line, allowing plenty of room for the beat and instrumental sounds to mingle.

The pace of the song remains unhurried until around the last third,  when a more-full bodied, almost orchestral sound is brought in, allowing it to build to a satisfying conclusion.
