Lang Owen here – I write songs about something that seems like nothing but feels like everything. I’m based in Columbia, SC and write straight out of the 1970s singer-songwriter tradition, employing poetic lyrics to express the challenges and possibilities of the current day, often viewed through the perspective of individual’s imagined interior lives. My third album, Cosmic Checkout Lane, is about seeking out and living our wisdom at any moment, including standing in a grocery store checkout line. Cosmic Checkout Lane comes out April 12, 2024 – it’s my second collaboration with musician/producer Todd Mathis.

The inspiration for “Girl With The Abacus In Her Head” is my memory of a friend who easily solved math problems in her head by visualizing an abacus. The song’s not about her, but instead about anybody who has ever set aside a talent or an ambition, then struggled to make sense of that choice later in life. Hopefully the song’s chorus offers some encouragement that one’s potential can be reclaimed: Take care of your promise, and it’ll take care of you.
“Girl With The Abacus In Her Head” is the first single off my upcoming album COSMIC CHECKOUT LANE, produced by Columbia music legend Todd Mathis, and available April 12, 2024 on all the major streaming platforms.

You’ve got to chase your dreams while you can. But even if you wait “too long” – there’s no better time than the present to do what you’re really meant to do.

His unspoken longing expresses the challenge couples face reassuring each other of their connection when they’re occupied with jobs, driving kids here and there, taking care of aging pets, and countless other tasks in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Producer Todd Mathis and I did our level best to create a soulfolk sound, with Todd showing his amazing versatility by handling all the instrumentation except my acoustic guitar part. One lovely feature of this recording is the harmony vocal sung by Columbia musician Kelly Porterfield.
Give “Just So I Know” a listen and then give somebody a hug.
“Just So I Know” is the second single from my upcoming album Cosmic Checkout Lane, scheduled for release April 12, 2024, and produced by Todd Mathis.
