Holiday Show Roundup
Published: December 23, 2016Alright people, it’s the holiday season and I know many of you (including myself) are out of town visiting relatives and stuff, but there are a bunch of really awesome shows coming up over the next few weeks and I wanted to throw them all together in one post. Below this blurb you’ll find a bunch more blurbs about shows that are coming up in Charleston that I think you should know about and attend. This will be the last post on here for about 3 weeks, but you can expect Extra Chill to pick back up again big time after the holidays. We’ve got some cool stuff planned for the New Year and we can’t wait to share it with all of you. For now, though, check out these upcoming shows.
Tonight: SondorBlue w/ Everest Cale and Haley Mae Campbell at Royal American
Tonight at Royal is the first in the long line of awesome stuff that we’ve got coming up in Charleston. This will be SondorBlue’s first time playing at Royal, and I know they’re very excited about it which means you should be too. They’ve got Everest Cale and Haley Mae Campbell opening up for them, and it’s going to be a great show. Music starts at 9pm, and there’s a $5 cover at the door. After that you can drink all the $2 Genesee in the world and vibe out.
Tuesday, December 27th, 2017: The Artisanals with She Returns From War at Royal American
The Artisanals are a band that Johnny Delaware started after leaving SUSTO. Next Tuesday at Royal they’re going to play their debut show, and it should be really cool. Opening for The Artisanals is She Returns From War, winner of the 2016 Charleston City Paper Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. Tickets are $8 and the show starts at 8:30pm. Don’t miss it.
Thursday, December 29th, 2017: Futurebirds & The High Divers at the Music Farm
Next Thursday night at Music Farm you can catch Charleston locals The High Divers playing with Futurebirds out of Georgia. Show starts at 9pm and will probably go until around midnight. It’s the first night in a mini weekend tour that Futurebirds and The High Divers are doing to close out 2017, with shows the subsequent nights in Asheville and Charlotte.
Tickets to the Music Farm show here.
Friday, December 30th, 2017: tomatoband at The Purple Buffalo OR The Royal American’s 5th Birthday Party
You have a choice to make on Friday, December 30th, between tomatoband at The Purple Buffalo or The Royal American’s 5th Birthday Party featuring Crab Claw, Birdcloud, and the Legend of Country Music, Brent Brent (who may bear some resemblance to Justin Osborne of SUSTO). Both are going to be awesome events, so no matter which you choose you most likely won’t regret your decision. Both shows start at 9pm. The tomatoband show is free, and they’ll probably have $1 PBR on sale at the Buffalo. The Royal American’s birthday party costs $5 at the door. I’m not going to throw my opinion into this one, because I’d be happy to find myself at either one.
Saturday, New Years Eve 2017: SUSTO and Shakey Graves at Charleston Music Hall OR Chuckdown Countdown at Patriot’s Point
Obviously on New Years Eve there’s so much going on that a decision is nearly impossible, but I’ve managed to narrow it down to my two favorite choices for New Years. Keep in mind that this doesn’t factor in a chilled out house party with some close friends. It’s all about the music, and for this section, I will throw my opinion out there.
I can’t think of a better New Years party than a SUSTO and Shakey Graves show. I saw Shakey Graves at Shaky Knees Festival last summer, and it was awesome. He’s playing two nights at the Music Hall (also Dec 30th with T. Hardy Morris), and the second night with SUSTO is going to be really cool. If you’re looking for a chill way to ring in the New Year, and to head home feeling happy about what you just witnessed and heard, then the Charleston Music Hall is your best bet. Quality music and quality people always makes for a memorable night.
If SUSTO and Shakey Graves isn’t your cup of tea, or you’re looking for more of a bangin’ party, then go see Stop Light Observations play Chucktown Countdown. I imagine it to be more of a nightclub vibe early on, with DJ’s performing sets of party music and live dancers and all that jazz, which is cool and all but the real reason to go is to catch the bands play which doesn’t happen until the end of the night. Either way it’s going to be lit and if you want to drink Titos Vodka and fly to another planet to watch the new year come in then head to Patriot’s Point.
Wednesday, January 4th, 2017: Human Resources and The Landing w/ Billie Fountain at Royal American
The Human Resources show at Royal American on Wednesday, January 4th is your last chance to see them play before Dries goes on tour with SUSTO. The band is also taking a break from playing shows to continue work on a new record, so that when they do come back to playing shows they will likely have some new music for us. They’re playing with The Landing from NY and Billie Fountain from Charleston to bring what they’re calling a mid-week dance party for the ages. And that’s exactly what I’m expecting. Dance party starts at 9pm. Get some pizza before you go.
Friday, January 6th, 2017: Brave Baby and 2 Slices at Royal American
I know January 6th is kind of pushing it for a Holiday Show, but I just had to round off the list with this one. Brave Baby shows are always a fun time, and seeing them on stage at Royal is just classic. The place is probably going to be packed out and awesome and everyone will be singing along and stuff. It’s one of those shows that you just can’t bring yourself to miss. Show starts at 9pm, $10 at the door. Get out there.
