    News:

“The woman charged with drunk driving in the death of a Folly Beach bride was released from jail March 1 on house arrest after prosecutors failed to meet a court-imposed deadline to bring the 26-year-old to trial.” (Ema Rose Schumer of The Post & Courier)

I’ll post the link for the article so everyone can be in the loop. There are several discussions to have here – drinking and driving, white privilege, the inequality of the American judicial system, etc.

What’s your opinion on what’s happening here?

Holy shit this is wild. I feel like the entire thing has been made into a spectacle, too. So unfortunate, honestly.

This story really sucks. I work out on Folly, and it definitely shook the community out there when this happened…I feel for the family and the people involved.

Thinking about that road, and the speed she was going (65 mph I believe). Just insane that somebody would go that fast on that road at any time under any conditions.

It sounds like a failure of the legal system to let her out of jail before trial because she could do it again.. Sucks that all these bars and businesses are going out of business or closing and she’s at home on her couch and this poor guy doesn’t have a wife anymore.

Bars having to close because of shit like this is a nightmare for the city. Not only does it directly impact the bars where the person was drinking, it also jacks up insurance rates across the board.

This woman has single handedly made Charleston a more expensive place to drink. Because guess what? Those costs get passed onto the people. What choice do the bars have but to raise their prices in the face of rising insurance rates?

I for one do not think the bars should be held responsible in this instance. I think the bars should stay open and let the bitch rot in jail. You do the crime, you pay the time.

How many people are getting wasted at bars all over Charleston on a daily basis and not killing newlyweds driving 65mph in a 25mph zone? And her second DUI.

I would like to mention that it is way to easy to call for Uber/Lyft or a Taxi! If you are getting that drunk when you go out… You need to take someone with you! Designated Driver’s and on and on I could go. I absolutely agree with you! This is on her! She should take responsibility and at the very least verbally state that it was she and not the establishment driving the vehicle!

It’s awful things like this have to happen for some individuals to open their eyes and face reality!

That was simply my opinion on carelessness and driving while intoxicated…. After reading the article….

ARE THEY CRAZY? First they should not have been allowed to make a deadline that close knowing how backed up the system is! And 2nd…. No no 2nd and no excuses! She should be in jail period!

Unless it has changed when I worked on Folly Rd @ a restaurant there are Ubers there. That was my only transportation for work and there are Taxi’s in the area as well. She could have called her family that is fought for her release to pick her up…… To many options for 2 families to have been forever changed by her drunken stuper is the only thing I can call it.

@Mandi not sure when you’re talking about but Uber in Charleston used to be a lot better before the pandemic. Folly beach especially can be hard to get an Uber.

Daddy’s money gets you pretty far in Charleston!
