Daddy’s Beemer, Darby Wilcox, and Abstract – That Rapper at The Royal American (Photos)

Thank you to everybody who came out to The Royal American this past Saturday night to party with us along with Daddy’s Beemer, Darby Wilcox, and Abstract – That Rapper. It was a fantastic evening all around, with each musician putting on a great performance to a large, enthusiastic crowd. We’re excited to continue bringing events like this one to Charleston, and we couldn’t do it without your support. Thank you to The Royal American for the hospitality, and thank you to the artists for performing like champions.

Saturday night was the first time that Daddy’s Beemer played in Charleston since moving here this past Spring, and they showed us why we should be glad to have them in the local scene. The crowd was oiled up with plenty of booze by the time they took the stage just after midnight, which made for a lot of commotion in the front in the form of a healthy mosh pit. They’ve got a full-length album in the works right now, and hopefully we’ll be hearing more about that in the near future.

Darby Wilcox came in from Greenville with her band The Peep Show and gave us all a peep at what’s going on in the upstate. Most of the crowd was unfamiliar with her music going into her set, but by the end of her performance she won the people over with her larger-than-life personality and thoughtful songwriting. If you haven’t heard her recent album 11:11 yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. Most of the songs she played on Saturday night came from that record.

Abstract – That Rapper kicked off the evening, with Darby’s band The Peep Show behind him. He had not practiced with the band before the set, but that didn’t seem to matter, as much of what he does is completely improvised. Abstract directed the band like a maestro, signalling with hand motions how fast or slow he wants them to play, and they fill in the gaps as they see fit. His set was filled with some familiar favorites, including single “Mumble Rap” and a cover of Ice Cube’s “It Was A Good Day”, and then he closed out with a couple of new tunes.
