Daddy’s Beemer Cover Velvet Underground for Very Jazzed Cover Comp Vol. 2
    Published: December 6, 2020

Yesterday, boutique label Very Jazzed released a compilation of covers recorded by artists on the label’s roster. Among those artists are none other than Charleston’s resident hooligans, Daddy’s Beemer, who contribute a cover of “Pale Blue Eyes” by the Velvet Underground. This is the first time that Daddy’s Beemer have released a cover, and it’s also the first taste of new material from them since the release of their full-length debut album Denmark in July.

Daddy’s Beemer bring “Pale Blue Eyes” into their jangly musical world. They take the mellow, ethereal vibe of the Lou Reed-penned tune and give it a bit more oomph, with a buildup that adds depth and layers as the song progresses. Production-wise it’s similar to the style of Denmark, with a deep bass line at the front of the mix, and here we’ve even got some accenting violin and congas. Also in the mix is Rachel Branham singing harmonies, who helps to soften Brady’s vocal affect on the chorus.

Overall it’s a pretty solid cover that gives the song a unique spin. It’s also highly appropriate for Daddy’s Beemer to channel the notorious degeneracy of Lou Reed.
