As time winds down for the Cultura Festival, I find it’s only fitting to take a look at the dope local artists that will be performing alongside Curren$y. Today, we’ll tap into Greenville’s very own, $wvnk. I’m very fresh to her sound and I am utterly addicted after listening to her recent album Finding $wvnk.
There’s a growing presence of high-level female lyricism returning to southern hip-hop. It’s even more exciting to find it intact and evolving on the underground level in artists such as BKiddo, BigBodyGz (Hood Badu), Yun $Wag and more. $wvnk easily makes that “#GxldApproved list with her smooth, harmonically flexible style and relentless confidence to match.
She effortlessly slides between hardcore rap to melodic southern lyricism. The most fluent example of this dichotomy would be her album Finding $wvnk. A grand tapestry of wavey, new age trap drops like “Birds” and pineal-striking spoken words like “Affirmitive Affirmation”.
I look forward to seeing $wvnk’s infectious energy translate on stage. Tap in ASAP! May is right around the corner so stay tuned in for more artists that will be featured at The Cultura Festival May 6th! Tickets available here.
