Last week, Charleston bedroom artist Black Nicholson released another single, “Where Does the Time Go”. This is the third single to come from the Black Nicholson project, led by Charleston local Bradley Alexander Beckman, who records all of the instruments as well as the vocals on his iPhone in his downtown bedroom. “Where Does the Time Go” is a jangly lo-fi tune that laments on time wasted or lost with hesitation, done up with an old school appeal.
“Where Does the Time Go” and the other Black Nicholson songs present this interesting connection between modern music and the music of the 70s. The songs include many elements of old school music (here the Steve Miller Band comes to mind), but are led by the modernity of jangly guitar and filtered through that unmistakable DIY fuzz. It’s almost like Black Nicholson is a kid from the 70s, who hopped in a time machine to 2020 so he could use modern technology to record his songs.
