Earlier this week, Benny Starr released an NPR Tiny Desk Contestsubmission featuring “Resurrection”, a song off his upcoming full-length release, A Water Album. The album was recorded live at the Charleston Music Hall in September, and it was recently announced for official release on Wednesday, June 19th. Signed copies of the album on vinyl are available for pre-order at bennystarrsc.com.
Benny Starr has two big performances coming up over the course of the next two weeks. The first will be this Saturday, April 20th at The Royal American for Cultura Festival, where he will perform alongside a lineup of some of Charleston’s most talented black artists. The event is curated by Matt Monday and it is the first major event in Charleston to feature an all-black lineup. Tickets to Cultura are $20 and available here.
The following Saturday, April 27th, Benny will perform a headlining set at Redux Contemporary Art Center for the fourth annual PBR Dirty Southeast Fest. The festival is free, and Pabst is transforming Redux into a festival venue designed to pay homage to Recovery Room Tavern. Learn more about Dirty Southeast in our interview with PBR’s Jillian Cunningham here.
The “Resurrection” session was recorded at Charleston’s Rialto Row studio, with Contour’s Khari Lucas handling production. Contour will also play at Cultura this weekend, and we discussed both his music and the importance of the event with him in a recent interview. You can read that interview here.
