I was privileged to get this gig photographing the 3D digital art contest at Beeple Studios this last Saturday.

It was an ‘experience’ to say the least. Artists from all over converged for a multi-tier elimination contest – where individuals were pitted against each other under a time constraint, to create a piece of artwork that was then judged by a group of their peers, from all over the world, via a social media/voting system. Leading up to a championship round for trophies and a cash prize!

If you’re not familiar, the studio space is an enormous experience in and of itself, for which the walls, the columns, the very space itself is alive with video animation, music – DJ’s, announcers, food and bev, and some of the craziest artwork swirling around you 20 feet tall, throughout!

Exhibit rooms of Beeple’s own artwork, OG computer systems… hyper realistic celebrity masked actors. This is a ONE OF A KIND experience.

I’ve been to theme parks, the state fair, festivals, concerts of every kind… and this is NEW.

Not sure how many times I used the word ‘experience’ just now, but you can’t overdo it in tying to explain this. It was amazing!

Nothing else like it that I’ve ever seen.

Really interesting concept! By the photos it reminds me of one of those Starcraft or LAN gaming competitions. That’s some high pressure to work under to be eliminated like that in real time.

Does everybody bring their own computer? Or is the gear already set up? I saw in some of the pictures, people using old school computers.

The main competition table was setup with multiple identical laptops provided by one of the sponsors, a company that builds workstations.

There was definitely a LAN Party vibe to it. The first few rounds, folks were pretty relaxed but by the end as the stakes got higher and people were being eliminated you could see that people were starting to get a little anxious. The prize was a cool $5K plus extras so when it came down the wire the feel of “competition” became more evident.

At the end, when the winner was announced, the 2nd place guy was very gracious… and no one exhibited anything negative at all.

There was a sort of ‘sports’ feel going on as well… which continued through the interviewing of the winner at the end.

Really fun event and a mind blowing studio space.

Wow that’s a pretty good prize for a party! I love a good LAN party, I used to set up and play Warcraft in my parents’ basement with my brothers during the holidays. So much fun being in the same room while playing those deep focus games, for some reason.

I put in for an RSVP to this at the last minute but I didn’t get in I guess. I will have to make it out to the next one.
