Babe Club – “Hate Myself”
Published: October 12, 2018On Wednesday, Babe Club premiered their first-ever single, “Hate Myself” with Vents Magazine. As of this morning, “Hate Myself” is available on all streaming platforms. Babe Club members Jenna Desmond and Corey Campbell self-recorded the track in the now-closed AAA storage units where Wolfgang Zimmerman used to record before the days of Rialto Row. The track features Jenna and Corey along with Julius DeAngelis (of The High Divers) on drums, Ross Bogan (of Doom Flamingo) on synth, and Camille Rhoden (of She Returns From War) with some vocal harmonies.
The release of “Hate Myself” comes with some bittersweet news: Jenna and Corey are no longer in SUSTO. Their last show with SUSTO was at Columbia’s Jam Room Music Festival on September 29th, 2018. From now on, the pair will be pursuing Babe Club full-time.
“Hate Myself” has a real 90s nostalgia feel to it. The lyrics dive into some of the mental anguish that Jenna says she felt from being on the road for so long. They express the difficulties that come along with not being completely comfortable in your own skin, and feeling like you have to pretend that everything is fine even if you don’t really think it is.
“I joke and say ‘SUSTO was my first job’ because I had a lot of insecurities doing something totally foreign to me. I had bambi legs,” Jenna explains. “I felt pretty isolated after being on the road so long, especially during our current political times. I lost contact with a lot of ladies in my life at first, and felt alone because I had no one to relate to. So hence ‘I hate myself’. I think in general when people start working full time, everyone gets busy, and keeping friendships and staying social is really hard sometimes.”

Pursuing Babe Club full-time naturally means that they’ll have time to book tours and record more music. The touring has already begun, actually. Babe Club is currently running around the U.S. with Nashville indie band Airpark (Royal American show on Saturday, November 10th). After the tour with Airpark ends, Babe Club will play a string of shows around the Carolinas with Louisville’s Frederick the Younger.
