It’s that time of year AGAIN! SWIM and Royal American are back with the 3rd installation of the esteemed Cultura Fest- a celebration of local black culture, music, business, and commUNITY. In 2019, they debuted Cultura with a streamline of all local talents, from Jah Jr and Slim Soul, to Abstract That Rapper and Benny Star. Last year, Cultura returned to Charleston after being halted by the Corona outbreak of 2019-2020. They absolutely STACKED the 2023 line up with local talents such as Tyrie, R Dotta, Mike Brown, SunRhe, and BluFlame James. However, with the return of Cultura, Matt Monday and the SWIM team cranked it up a notch by implementing a headliner-and not just ANY headliner-but the Hot Spittah himself, rap legend Curren$y. The environment was electric and attendance was through the roof! Royal American was in rare form last April. As if it couldn’t get any crazier, Cultura returns with another high energy line up of Dj’s, local artists, and this year’s headliner is Duke Duece-the modern day King of Crunk. If you aren’t familiar with DUKE DUECE, I URGE you to check out his catalog. That level of energy with the culture of community built by everything that is Cultura Fest, is bound to be a time we wont forget! Tickets are available on the Cultura Fest IG page and stay tuned for more #GxldApproved coverage and updates about Cultura from Extra Chill!

The more calculated and intentional the hiphop community moves here in Charleston, the more we get closer to being able to function like Atlanta, Texas, New York, and even Florida. They have made their underground circuits the premiere mix in these areas , and have come together to turn them into funnels for artists to really pop out of the city. There’s so much unconscious segregation in charleston hip hop, but i slowly see it starting to shift. Things like Cultura coming back in to the yearly circuit of hip hop festivals, has definitely added to that sauce. Hip hop is everywhere in Charleston now, from DT to Summerville, its receiving engagement like never before. However, we have to keep it special and not oversaturate the system with it-this is where that intention plays its part
