aka MosStef aka MaskedSlade of UnHeard Ent. recently released his sophomore project, “The Knowledge God: Slide 1,” breaking down concepts of self-awareness and social commentary with a blend of introspective lyricism and profound multi-dimensional themes.
Comprising of four tracks (3 of which are self produced)—”3rd Eye Shit,” “ICYUNVME,” “Mighty Mos,” and “Underground”—the EP is the first part of a multi-part project that dives deep into the realms of 5% knowledge, astrology, spirit science, universal laws, through the perspective and experiences of MosStef.
This project not only showcases his exceptional lyrical abilities as an artist but also serves as a platform for enlightening listeners on topics often overlooked in mainstream hip hop.
The opening track, “3rd Eye Shit,” sets the tone for the EP with its paced, looping beats that allow MosWantedStef’s potent lyrics to shine. He discusses the mysticisms of the third eye, a symbol of perception and intuition, and how universal laws play a crucial role in keeping this insight alive. MosWantedStef critiques societal elements that hinder personal growth and awareness, suggesting that many individuals choose to remain oblivious to these truths.
This track is a powerful reminder of the obstacles that block our potential and the conscious effort required to overcome them, establishing an engaging philosophical foundation for the rest of the album.
“..life is what you do with it / lose your crown chakra on the goofy shit / The pain of getting crossed without a crucifix/poverty the root of it/ power and control has us fu*** past the lubricant/ third eye improving it”
In “ICYUNVME,” MosStef reflects on his journey and the harsh realities faced by those from his past. The storytelling in this track is poignant, as he recounts returning to his roots only to discover how many of his peers have succumbed to unfortunate fates. The conflicted feelings of nostalgia and guilt are palpable as he wishes he could have offered guidance.
Through his journey as a disciplined lyricist, he acknowledges the envy it breeds among those still trapped in their circumstances, which adds a layer of complexity to his narrative. The dedication to his craft shines through as he remains true to himself, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and authenticity in the face of adversity.
The introspective nature of “Mighty Mos” allows listeners to witness the artist’s self-reflection and contemplation. MosStef employs clever wordplay and double entendres, weaving cryptic verses that invite multiple interpretations AND multiple perceptions as he shifts into 3rd person point of view for his second verse. This track serves as both a celebration of his achievements and a meditation on the qualities that define him as ‘MIGHTY.’ As he navigates the intricacies of life, I feel his lyrical prowess is exhibited most potently in this track.
“..peep bro mind, atomic mass of 79, elements/see the science? iron/ man shall face the iron, ‘cu de gras’, make a fall that’s more ionic/ guns I fought em/ the nickel plated, keeps the folks sedated/ made it in a way it stays attached, i’m more bionic, these STEF-fonics/ I’d lead the way if ya ‘bro-sure’/ words carved in stone spoke in biblical folklore/ Mos is Moses, made a plan for all to understand/ lead the law of land and held the tablets in his open hands/ Israelite (Is real light) a bird of a feather/ you either, for 12 or fu** 12, whatever..”
Finally, “Underground,” featuring contributions from fellow UnHeard-ians Jordan The Chemi$t &Tony Shot Me, and yours truly, Indi, paying homage to the underground scene while delving into themes of self-awareness and the complexities of being an emcee. The collaborative effort amplifies the EP’s message, highlighting the importance of ciphering knowledge of all spectrums within the growing underground hip hop community.
In conclusion, “The Knowledge God: Slide 1” is the beginning of what I believe to be a powerful sequence of MosWantedStef’s multifaceted artistry and dedication to exploring profound themes based on mentality, spirituality, history, and alternative thought. By intertwining personal narratives with universal concepts, he invites listeners to engage in a deeper conversation about self-awareness, societal struggles, and the pursuit of knowledge. This EP not only cements his rising status as one of the Charleston Underground’s most ardent ‘pens’, but also represents the potency of one of the illest hip hop factions to roam Charleston, UnHeard Ent.
