in reply to: Jxshamar – Charleston, SC (Hip-Hop)Thank you for sharing!! Your track “Free” was placed on Extra Chill’s New Music Radar this week. Keep coming back to share updates and network with other artists!
Hey Schiz, thanks for joining and sharing your music!
The only thing I know about the music scene in Rock Hill is centered around the “Concerts at the Courtroom” series hosted by Mike Gentry. The program is funded by the York County Arts Council and Mike books all kinds of different local artists from the scene there and beyond. I’d imagine that is where you can meet some people who can tell you more, if you haven’t already checked them out.

The last time I was there was quite some time ago (2019), but it was filled with a super diverse crowd and I’d imagine that it has only gotten more well-run ever since.
Here’s the interview I did with him back then, much of this is (probably) still valid information: https://extrachill.com/2019/01/the-courtroom-is-the-heart-of-the-rock-hill-music-scene.html
Someone was also telling me about the house show scene there and how it has some interesting alternative genres.
Thanks again for sharing your music, I wasn’t able to add it to our playlist this week but I hope you continue to share and engage with the community. I’d be willing to share some more direct feedback on the music, if you’d like, just respond here and let me know, and I’ll send you a note via email.
Cheers,
Chris
in reply to: Sammy Newk – Boston, MAHere’s the single that Sammy mentioned, “So Deep”, which is featured on our New Music Radar this week.
in reply to: Highwater 2024@toastedcarrot fun fact I stood behind the Linda Lindas during the Flaming Lips and they were all dancing, grooving, and having the time of their lives. One person asked them for a photo but mostly everyone just let them boogie!
I gotta say Wayne Coyne’s stage presence was also really great. He really seemed to care and created an atmosphere that was very positive to be around.
I’ll be back when my article is ready… and Kate’s… plus photos…
in reply to: Erode The Dream – Charleston, SC (Rock/Grunge/Heavy)I really enjoyed “The Waiting”, which premiered on Extra Chill last week. It’s cool to hear a vocalist this strong (Mauricio Masãre) coming into the Charleston scene and playing with some people who have been around a while. Love to see fresh, talented faces and collaboration around town.

I also spoke with BadJon at High Water some more about the project this weekend. He told me they record every one of their practices and it helps them dial in their sound because they can then easily reference and develop ideas that came up organically. This includes sending things back and forth with Mauricio before they come together, based off those recordings & demos.
Sounds like a great way to not only hone in on your sound but also make the most out of challenging schedules and limited rehearsal time.
Tin Roof show is May 18th with Genrevolta and Spartina
in reply to: Cry Baby – Brooklyn, NY (Rock Band)Wanted to share this hilarious ad I just got on YouTube after engaging with this topic. Lolz
in reply to: Kendrick Lamar ‘Diss’Here’s the piece that @indigxld did on the history of the rap beef, from the 1980s all the way to the latest media controversy. It’s a really great read that touches upon all this.. which has continued to unfold even further since we started this discussion.

And… Kanye West got involved
Even Rick Ross…
This is getting pretty wild. I’m sure someone with more knowledge about the subject can drop an assessment, im just gathering the data…
in reply to: Highwater 2024Smaller stage is a great idea. Think a good template that I’ve seen work incredibly well is Folk Festival up in Newport, RI with the three levels of stages (Harbor, Quad, and Fort) with two smaller soap box style stages for local artists/open mics. Recently (two years ago?) Illiterate Light has been running a bicycle/solar powered stage that is really community and family centric with local artists. Also they have plenty of great local art/jewelry/clothing vendors everywhere and non-profits...

Also they have plenty of great local art/jewelry/clothing vendors everywhere and non-profits for volunteer days throughout the community. On top of a festival and historical museum that has a few sets too. Gushing rant about Folk Fest over.
