It’s an understatement to say that Ardmore music hall has curated an incredible 2 nights of music for their annual Unlimited Devotion Spring Festival celebrating the music of the Grateful Dead. Unfortunately, I waited around for the daily line up before pulling the trigger on which night of the two-night run to attend. Of course now it’s sold out. However, there appear to be tickets available on the secondary markets / ticket transfer sites for around 100 bucks with fees. Given the line up – it’s worth it. The event is featuring one of Extra Chill’s favorite’s – none other than Kanika Moore of Doom Flamingo – as a special guest. Also featured are Aaron Magner of the Disco Biscuits, Daniel Donato, Steve Kimock, as well as a set from LaMP on night two. This is an incredible line up of musicians – set to be one for the ages. Kicksville — PAPADOSIO FEST -DC / Maryland Area (Avenue MD) – Friday May 9th and May 10th.
I was sad to recently learn that Papadosio will be taking an <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>indefinite hiatus </span>(my most dreaded two word phrase) from touring. They also announced on their socials that this festival features what may be their last acoustic set ever. Knowing this, I have been taking a heavy Dosio of Papadosio. It seems from the outside that good ol’ Papa D had really blown up over the past few years, so I’m surprised to hear that they are taking a break from touring – possibly forever. The posts certainly make it seem like forever.
It is inconceivable to me how drained one must feel after 15 years of non stop touring, plus the stress of having growing families, small children, and how a touring band can interfere with that whole having a personal life thing. What seems amazing in your teens and 20s can very well tire into your 30s and 40s. It’s easy enough for me to abandon my family 1 to 2 nights per month, but it’s unimaginable what that must feel like 180 days out of the year.
Screw that tho abandon your families, skip mother’s day, hit the Kicksville fest. Ask my buddy Smokey G he just abandoned his family and he’s swearing by what he has been calling “Hoochie Daddy Summer of ’25.” I think he’s just hiding his pain through humor however.
1 or 2 night passes are available. At 300 bucks all in with car camping it’s a good deal. Sad to see Dosio taking a break. Hopefully they go back on tour at some point. If you are missing Kicksville in Avenue MD, they will also be playing many other shows in the next few months, including Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain NC on June 20th and June 21, as well as a special set at Elements Music Festival Sunday August 10 (one night tickets available) at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond PA. You’ll see me there in the front row or close to it. There have been a lot of losses over the past few years of some of the great jam bands from the early to mid 00’s, particularly Twiddle and Dopapod come to mind. The first time I saw Twiddle was at Elements 2 years ago and they absolutely ripped a hole in the universe and I fully expect Papadosio to do the same. I’m sad by this but very much looking forward to seeing a few sets of the Papa D before they call it quitting time. It’s one of the sad realisms of loving jam bands. By not being able to make money primarily through streaming or album sales, or viral vids, they’re forced to endlessly tour, often surrounded by a never-ending supply of party favors, and it’s a recipe for burnout. It’s true of more than just jam bands because musical artists outside of a very lucky few do not have a good way to make a living on playing music alone other than non stop touring (if you are even able to make money that way) outside of what? Weddings, being in a union playing in an orchestra or other musical theater gigs, or teaching? It’s rough out there. So make sure to skip mother’s day and support Papadosio. Your mom will understand. It’s not like Mother’s Day is going on an indefinite hiatus. It will be here next year, unlike Papadosio’s live show.

I haven’t talked about it much but the music video for my newest release “Tremolo” (April 2025) is out now. The video is me putting together a collage for the cover art. Anyone else find flipping old magazines and clipping pictures therapeutic? If so, tell me in comments. I am looking forward to sharing more music soon. Some singles first and then after, an album.
