My new album SAME DEVIL NEW SKIN dropped Friday! Working on promotion and a short tour. Ya’ll give it a spin, tell me what you think. I’m including a short descriptor about the album from my Bandcamp page. provides a little context.
“SAME DEVIL NEW SKIN is the 4th full length studio solo record from Don Merckle. Specifically constructed to be experienced from beginning to end. Each track gaining strength and significance from the one preceding it BUT also capable of existing individually on a “song-by-song” basis. This album is designed to provide multiple experiences depending on how you choose to listen.
Don conceived the idea for this album while watching a documentary on folk-horror films and wondered if anyone had written such a thing as a folk-horror record. SAME DEVIL NEW SKIN was born and with the help of producers Evan Simmons and Zac Thomas it evolved into a 9 song cinematic roller coaster of dark themes, wild ideas and catchy melodies. A cross between trippy murder-folk and haunted western disco.
Recorded at The Jam Room Recording studio in Columbia, SC”
in reply to: Don Merckle – Charleston, SC (Americana/Folk Rock)SURPRISE NEW SINGLE DROP!! This is the first song I wrote for my upcoming new album SAME DEVIL NEW SKIN. I wanted a story to sing and tell around the campfire. I wanted enough space to straddle the line between a reality, a dream and a nightmare with a chorus that was provocative enough to make the point and tie it all together…like a certain rug, lol😉. The atmosphere was, arguably, the most important part. Dark and dynamic enough to experience a growing, comfortable paranoia. Anyway, I hope you’ll take a listen and tell me what you think. What other feelings might this song elicit?
Lemme know! and PLEASE, PLEASE share, if you dig it, put it on your playlists and perhaps try it out around your next campfire!
Once again, a team of brilliant folks helped me bring this song (and more) to life. Evan Simmons and Zac Thomas (Mixing and Mastering by David Baker and Stefan Heger respectively) and the incredible talents of Moses Andrews III, Zach Bingham, Chris Bussell and Desirée Richardson. Could not have done it without them and couldn’t be prouder. Let’em know when you see them : )

in reply to: Don Merckle – Charleston, SC (Americana/Folk Rock)This is the second song I wrote for my upcoming album, SAME DEVIL NEW SKIN. It’s a story song, a folk song, really. It’s a heartbreaking mystery…and so much more. This entire album is a love song to folk horror cinema, storytelling, music and independent art. I challenged myself in a number of different ways that I believe this song demonstrates. So far, it’s the most popular of the new material I’ve been performing in recent shows. I couldn’t be more proud of the work everyone did in bringing this song (and the entire album) to life. Featured here are the production team of Evan Simmons and Zac Thomas (Mixing and Mastering by David Baker and Stefan Heger respectively) and the incredible talents of Moses Andrews III, Zach Bingham and Lindsay Holler.
It’s been a long road just to get to the starting line so, if you dig the song, let me know! AND do me a favor and share it with everyone you know…EVERYONE!, add it to your playlists, and go follow me on Spotify and all the platforms you use. It’s the world we live in now, so those sorts of things are a tremendous help. Come see a show when I’m in your area too because that also helps a ton! Every show is different than the last, so you’re bound to experience something new each time. I appreciate the hell out of all of you who put up with me obsessively shouting into the void, so here’s to another swing out into the universe.
