Cleveland-based rapper Tobyraps dropped a new single, “Smirnoff and Cyanide,” featuring vocalist Earth to Eve, on Friday. The track was produced by John Shields of Little Stranger and Chris DiCola.
“Smirnoff and Cyanide” kicks off with a jovial, old-fashioned keys sound, setting the tone for a track will deal heavily in irony. “I’m feeling good, never been better / It’s the happiest I’ve been that I remember / I’m feeling so great, no lie / I wouldn’t be pissed if it’s the day that I die,” Toby sings first, before rapping about being so happy he’s suicidal.
A womp-womp sound is layered into the production, furthering the sense of dark tongue-in-cheek.
“I’m feeling ecstasy even though I see / My ex is kissing somebody that looks like me,” Earth to Eve adds in a smooth, slightly smoky voice, giving a touch of sardonic polish to the campy tune.
