On Saturday, November 23rd, SUSTO brought their ‘Summer to Fall’ tour to Antone’s Nightclub in Austin, TX. It was SUSTO’s first hometown show in Austin after moving here last year, and also the first show that I am covering for Extra Chill as an Austin resident, after moving here last week.

For anybody who is new here: SUSTO formed in Charleston, SC, where Extra Chill also formed, so there is a treasure trove of writing about them on this website dating back to 2016.

I also had a chance to collaborate with another Charleston friend, Mia Naome Al-Taher (@theladywiththechipsandsalsa), who was there on official duty taking photos for SUSTO, and was kind enough to share her photos for this review.

Overall, this was an exciting night in the world of Extra Chill. To see SUSTO performing a packed out show in a historic venue halfway across the country from where they started was special.

Opening acts Conor Donohue and Joelton Mayfield kicked things off, both delivering strong performances before a mostly unfamiliar crowd. As the room started to fill in, Mayfield in particular caught the attention of the audience and received well-deserved cheers of appreciation for his offbeat, drunk-trucker-Americana style.

Special shout out to Cannon Rogers, who played pedal steel and guitar with all three bands, and showed no signs of slowing down.

    SUSTO

SUSTO opened their set with “Hard Drugs” followed by “Life is Suffering”, setting the tone for a great night. Both songs are fan-favorites, lyrical standouts, with “Hard Drugs” being perhaps the most iconic song from the early days in Charleston.

A long set followed, packed with songs from the full spectrum of their catalogue, which now spans five studio albums and numerous singles and bonus tracks. Lots of highlights including “Dream Girl”, one I hadn’t heard them do in a while, and “Break Free, Rolling Stone”, a highlight from their 2023 album My Entire Life to close out the set.

    Double Encore

For the first encore, they did “Daniel” and “Smoking Outside”, which is a song that I wrote about recently via the Live From Codfish Hollow release. I thought these were a nice change-up from the expected “Jah Werx”, which was absent from the setlist. During “Daniel” I filmed a little clip for our Instagram:

After that, the whole band left the stage, and Justin returned with Judy Blank for an acoustic rendition of “Weather Balloons”, a single from their 2019 album Ever Since I Lost My Mind. They notably did not use the microphones and instead gathered at the foot of the stage with the fans.

This was a fun introduction to Austin for Extra Chill. I spent some time at Antone’s during SXSW and it was good to return for what I expect was the first of many times. SUSTO left us on a high note and we spent the rest of the night on East 6th Street howling at the moon.
