Sublime with Rome Farewell Tour at Firefly Distillery (Photos + Recap)
Published: September 5, 2024This past Saturday, August 31st, Sublime with Rome brought their Farewell Tour to Firefly Distillery, joined by a stacked bill that included included Sitting on Stacy, Fortunate Youth, and G. Love. The group has been touring as Sublime with Rome since 2009, originally featuring two original members of Sublime, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, alongside frontman Rome Ramirez.
Bud Gaugh parted ways with the project in 2011, but Eric Wilson remained in the band until February of 2024, when Sublime reunited with Bradley Nowell’s son, Jakob. This tour marks the nostalgic end of an era, but also an exciting new time for all of the musicians involved, with new horizons ahead.
Rome will be focusing on his career as a solo artist, which has existed alongside Sublime with Rome since the beginning, but will now take center stage. He also has a collaborative duo project with Duddy of Dirty Heads, which includes the 2023 EP, Cactus Cool.
Sublime with Rome released their fourth and final studio album on May 10th.
Sitting on Stacy
Rising California ska-punk act, Sitting on Stacy kicked off the evening at Firefly with a strong performance. They got the people moving early and brought a solid energy that likely won them some new fans in the audience. They also played in Charleston earlier this year — March 19th — opening for Surfer Girl on the Pour House Deck.
Fortunate Youth
Next up was Fortunate Youth, a beloved reggae-rock act who had the audience singing along. They delivered a top notch set that was energetic and professional as ever. Singer Dan Kelly especially shined, keeping the attention of the audience with a positive vibe that doesn’t wear off. Some fans threw a few joints on stage, he caught one and smoked it right there. See photos from their Pour House show on September 16th, 2023 here.
G. Love
The widely-beloved G. Love always deliver a technique and expertise as musicians that shines through. Drummer and occasional bassist Chuck Treece is also a skateboard legend and member in a number of influential bands over the years. Steve Aycock, the photographer reports that it was a real treat to see and photograph him and the rest of the band. There may have been a sound issue on the stage during this set, as some fans report that it was hard to hear the vocals.
Sublime with Rome
As the sun crested the trees at Firefly Distillery and the sky faded into darkness, Rome Ramirez ran out onto the dark stage with the Sublime hit “April 29th, 1992 (Miami)” blasting as the spot-lights came on. The crowd threw their hands into the air, and the party that was already well underway was taken to a new level. Rome’s heady vocals do the Sublime tunes justice as he sings and growls out the hits that we all know and love.
