Shovels & Rope – “Mississippi Nuthin’” + “Carry Me Home”

Last week, Shovels & Rope released two more songs off their upcoming album By Blood. The album will be released on Friday, April 12th, which is the day before the kickoff of the third annual High Water Festival in North Charleston (they curate the festival). That means their set at High Water this year will essentially be their album release party. We can get down with that, especially after hearing these two songs.

“Mississippi Nuthin’” and “Carry Me Home” follow the energetic lead single “The Wire”, which was released back in January when they announced the album. “Mississippi Nuthin’” is told from the perspective of somebody at home watching a loved one out there having a successful career in music, while they’re still living in the town they grew up in working on their next get rich quick scheme. “Carry Me Home” is more of a personal song about trying to come to terms with your shortcomings and getting on with your life. It touches upon family memories and nostalgic references to music of the past. I think it’s the best song we’ve heard from the album thus far.
