Thursday, September 12th, powerhouse bands My Morning Jacket and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats brought their co-headlining Eye to Eye tour to Charleston’s Credit One Stadium. The tour features equal-length sets from both bands, with the closer swapping each night. In Charleston, this meant The Night Sweats were up first, with MMJ shutting it down.

Extra Chill was glad to document this excellent show, featuring a cross-section of Nathaniel Rateliff’s soulful, blues-rooted sound with the always powerful rock & roll force that is My Morning Jacket. They each have a long history of performing in Charleston, with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats being on the first High Water in 2017 & more, and My Morning Jacket headlining the event in 2021 and making yearly stops in the Holy City, including June 2023 at Firefly Distillery.

It was an overcast, drizzly day but the rain held off for the duration of the show, and Charleston was treated to an excellent night of live music and collaboration.

Rateliff took the stage and sat down at his piano, and the band followed suit into “David & Goliath,” the opening track to their latest album, South of Here (2024). Soon, he was out from behind the piano, revealing an all-black outfit with a touch of rainbow suspenders. The group took the Thursday night crowd to church, as they stomped and clapped along like a Southern congregation.

The Night Sweats brought a big band sound that elevated Nathaniel’s booming bluesy vocals through the layers of the stadium. For the peak of the set Nathaniel pulled out the electric to lay down some heavy rock and blues riffs, reminiscent of Bob Seger in his prime, with a dash of B.B. King.

Near the end of the set, they were joined by Jim James and Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket for a cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright,” giving a taste of what was soon to come. They finished with the 2015 hit, “S.O.B.” and the stage went dark to prepare for MMJ, just after sunset.

Over the past decade-plus, My Morning Jacket has emerged as one of the strongest rock & roll bands the United States has to offer. Always flying slightly under the radar, they have built a reputation for themselves through pure musicianship and a strong connection between the band and the audience. With this being my shared opinion, I was personally very excited to see their set.

They came out with Z classic, “Gideon,” but a sound issue that meant muted volume on the stage and slight confusion among the crowd. After a minute or so, the PA kicked on, and the band of course hadn’t missed a beat. Their resilience once again showcased why they deserve such a dedicated fanbase.

“Off the Record” into “Least Expected” followed, and then the fan-and-band favorite, “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream, Pt. 2.” Now the set was fully rolling, and Jim James was out front in all-white, doing his maestro bit with the crowd.

“Phone Went West” and “Feel You” held down the beefiest part of the show, and as they transitioned into “Evil Urges” it became clear just how good their timing and cohesiveness as a band are. Both Jim and Carl seamlessly swapped their respective guitars during this and if you didn’t see it happen, you would never have noticed.

Nathaniel Rateliff joined them for the Chuck Berry tune, “C’est La Vie,” which I must note was also in rotation for the Jerry Garcia Band in the 90s. After Nate left the stage, the final two tracks included two songs off their breakout album It Still Moves, which turned 20 years old last year: the always-triumphant “One Big Holiday” and “Dancefloors.” No encore was played by either band.

Clif Rhodes was in the mix with his camera for the entirety of both sets. He took many amazing photos, and thus the photo gallery is quite large. Enjoy!
