    Introducing Reverse Cowgirl: “Bayou”
    Published: September 2, 2024

Left to right: Drew Lewis, Tommy Merritt, AC Scar of Reverse Cowgirl.

Reverse Cowgirl is a brand new Charleston-based project spearheaded by AC Scar, the stage name of local country music songwriter Andrew Scardino. “Bayou” is the debut single from the project, recorded at local studio The Space with Ben Somerville, with the rhythm section from local rockers The Simplicity.

“Bayou” has a clear classic country influence, harkening to the outlaw sounds of artists like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Hailing from a small town in Georgia, AC Scar says that he has always loved Southern music of all kinds, but none more than those two country legends.

“Waylon is probably my biggest influence for songwriting and Willie is a big part of my cadence when singing and playing,” he says. “I just always admired their ability to stay true to their character. They could’ve gave in to the Nashville sound for a paycheck early on but they held out and gave rise to the greatest genre of American music, in my opinion. To me it’s like a portrait of the American west told through the lens of the southern 60s.”

AC Scar did a stint as an “under the radar” marijuana farmer in Colorado before narrowly escaping legal troubles down in Mexico, and he landed back in the Lowcountry. That story forms the the subject of the debut Reverse Cowgirl song, “Bayou.”

As for the band name, it is not as dirty as it sounds. Andrew says that he uses a reverse looper pedal to play guitar solos backwards, which can be heard on the song.

Listen to “Bayou” below, and stay tuned for more music on the way from Reverse Cowgirl, including a full EP or album by the end of 2024.
